I see people constantly worried and stressing over layoffs but nobody is paying attention to the fact that Truist has been working hard to create the environment that will push people to quit. Why pay severance if you don't have to? Pile on the work, add criticism, and mix in additional stress over potential job loss until the employee breaks and walks away - that's their recipe. I've seen it happen more than once. It's working because everybody is so focused on layoffs that they ignore everything else. Truly diabolical.

I can say with confidence that the “shock” over the horrific SunTrust (now Truist) culture hasn’t just come from long-term BB&T employees. It has come from those of us that have had significant experience working for other major banks as well.
But what REALLY amazes me is despite the comically bad environment, there are actually long-tenured SunTrust employees!! Are these people totally devoid of self-confidence? Do they feel unworthy of being happy? Do they secretly enjoy seeing teammates treated poorly? Is it the Stockholm Syndrome in action?
Personally, I am not wedded to BBT or STI, but I find it fascinating (and yes, sad) that intelligent people choose to spend their finite time on this earth working in such a toxic culture as STI/Truist...wow!
It's been a massive shock for heritage BB&T people. I've noticed that most of the complaining is coming from the BB&T side because the SunTrust people are used to this garbage culture and it's clearly the one that Truist has adopted. BB&T people need to get OUT! It will not get better.
I 100% agree with the sentiment expressed. What makes Truist markedly different from any other bank I have worked comes down to one fundamental thing. This management team isn’t just apathetic to you, they view you with outright contempt.
There were so many actions they could have taken to make things easier for us, things that wouldn’t have hurt them - yet nothing. It is obvious that preservation mode is so ingrained in them, that any good thing that happens to another human being is immediately seen as threatening. I wouldn’t believe that this type of “management psychology” still existed if I didn’t witness it; it is like we have been transported back to 1960. It is painfully apparent this was the primary reason SunTrust was not performing well enough to take market share and grow significantly - and now, thanks to Kelly’s stupidity, this dinosaur of a culture lives a little longer and impacts more lives...
Good people are already leaving in droves. Some even leaving significant money on the table in unvested equity. For a supposed merger of equals the leadership is now so heavily tilted toward STI it’s ridiculous especially considering that technically BB&T purchased STI.
Bonus payout time may in fact accelerate more departures and I wonder with all the other shadiness if they find a way to not even pay that out.
STI leadership drives the bus this way. Criticism of your decisions, question how and why you made a decision, telling you what should have done. NO focus on where the business unit is going, most have no idea where to take the business because they don’t understand the unit they’re leading. The frustration this creates will drive good people away. When bonus payouts come the people leaving will ratchet up. The good people will leave as soon as they can meanwhile they sit back and watch the circus while shaking their head.
