Thread regarding BP PLC layoffs

The Friend Zone

I am seeing more and more that people with experience are being exited and replaced by far less experienced people. It is glaringly obvious that experience doesn’t count for much and this is more about who is liked. So many promotions my god.

I have just done my MOC to someone who has literally no idea about the role or any technical experience of the role. This person had no understanding of even the simple BP control framework let alone the depth of knowledge needed on the risks. These are important risk based roles that can land BP in hot water without appropriate controls in place.

I cannot speak for how it is throughout the entire organisation, but I can speak for what I see in my part of the organisation. These people are not being set up for success.

I'm with you with 20 + yrs of experience. I had to MOC to a challenger since they were practically the only staff kept in my department. Poor kid. I honestly feel sorry for the folks left behind to pick up the pieces, but that's life. Give it a year and the pendulum will swing back the other way as BP goes on a hiring spree to fill the gaps.

As long as you are younger than 50 years of age you’ll be fine in the job market. I was with Amoco\BP for 40 years and am now working for Amazon. Amoco had far better managers.

Great that you did well from leaving! I am really optimistic about the future, I believe it is the right time for me to leave and I’m in a good place. The job market could be better mind, but I really believe I’ll be ok :)

This a great point. When I was let go, it wasn't because my position was eliminated, but I was replaced by someone who was paid less, and had no experience to do the job I was vacating. At that time, there were only two of us who held expertise in a core business technology. My replacement was (and still is) a friend of mine. But I knew there was no "book learning" he could have done to catch up. I didn't look back. I landed a position that paid me (more than I was ever paid) for the experience developed.

I’m not complaining and I definitely see the light now I’m leaving - this board is exactly for this type of discussion. Sadly as for them realising, Im not sure they will, the level of expertise and knowledge is now lower and they won’t realise that there are gaps. We have lost well over the 25% in our team.

stop complaining and make sure you did a proper MOC. They will figure it out after next quarter and when to make more cuts to save the dividend. Move along, it s—s sometimes. Be glad you are out now and not part of the future death march.

Sadly, experience costs more. BP is setting itself up for failure.
