my manager Bob and his manager Joe were both laid off so now we report to Joe's manager Tim. Tim has no idea what knowledge or skills we as a group have individually. For this quarter we were assigned our projects by our previous manager so life is good for now. What concerns me is the first quarter of next year, how is Tim going to know what projects to assign to us since he does not know our skill set. Seems to me that they haven't thought this through, (what else is new). Haven't heard a word from Tim nor has anyone else that now reports to him. Currently there are late submission projects that are out there that don't have anyone working on them so what happens to those? Just venting but think things will get very interesting the first of the year when we get our new assignments.

You described my situation almost exactly, and probably many others' too.
I think the most likely scenario is that people like us have been temporarily shuffled so that we technically have a home, at least for now.
But the dust hasn't settled. We're in a holding pattern until the next wave of layoffs affects people lower on the ladder. It's easier to restructure from top down than vice versa, so we're potentially next to be cut.
And our new bosses probably suspect that, and are thus not terribly interested in what we're doing or not doing. They're probably more interested in appearing to care because that's all they can really do.
In the meantime, think about what you do and don't want to do (in terms of not hating your job everyday) and hopefully find a way to influence your future work assignments until the next reorg.
Yes, not Tim! Having completed multiple diversity training courses I'm thinking we need Kim in this story :) . But agreed... it will get "interesting" soon.
Oh noes! Not Tim
