Of course they are legal. As long as you make at least the minimum required wage.

Pay cuts are definitely legal, even temporary ones. They can also furlough you and take your vacation days too. For privately-held companies that offer voluntary purchasing of stock shares, a company can take your investment capital by stating a $0 return. This is possible because the company sets the price, not the market.

So companies have a lot of options to take money from you and I’m sure there’s more

The Cost Reduction through salary cut cuts, Tax Incentives, lower operating cost in cheaper locale, etc... same reason why ex-partiates who move to Taiwan are defaulted to a lower salary given the lower region moved to.
