Thread regarding Imperial Oil Limited layoffs

Be kind to yourself

There is life after Imperial oil. And what a fine life it will be. Any company in your future will be lucky to have you as an employee with the skills and knowledge you are able to provide. A company that will reward your hard work and you will be better off for. You are worth something - don’t forget it. Remind yourselves that the company lost a great asset that should have been valued and you will rebound from this.

The Imperial culture is tyrannical. Nepotism, cronyism, favoritism and racial/ gender discrimination are ingrained in this toxic culture - its heart and soul. The company is mismanaged, operates as a charity.

Life after imperial can go either way. It depends on the individual and how strong their resume is and how well they can market themselves to prospective employers amidst the competition.

It seems like it also depends how long you were in the company. Newer hires 5 years will likely have it easier to get another good job vs. more experienced, just based on the job market.

The reason you are hearing people are happy after they left, is that people are only telling you the good news.

I was severed from IOL several years ago, and have mixed feelings about the whole thing. Since most started their careers with IOL and worked there for extended period, any employer that you work for will be strange to you, as the IOL mentality (e.g. processes, career management, controls focused) is so ingrained into our minds. The pay outside of IOL is also slightly lower.

You also felt like you have been cheated - they have been telling you no layoffs, and then you were let you like yesterday's garbage, all the while others get to stay on the mothership.....

I haven’t heard from a single employee that quit or was laid off in the past that was unhappy with leaving imperial. All were saying how they’re getting paid more and are way happier in their new jobs and companies.
