In general, IT implements automation and then stays around to support the automation.
It's the bean counters and clerks that get replaced with zeros and ones.
Anyone experienced in tech knows you can’t automate everything but MBA graduates who never actually done the job don’t realize that until it’s too late. Been there, saw that.
No doubt. ICs reduction will happen in near future if you go by the layers/spans trends.

company too big overall, most people dont have the skills required to do any automation; they can hire people with the skills for same price or less even. What is your question?
@qdp, I understand that, but you need people to implement the automation, and those people tend to be in Tech.
Just about every business and function will have layoffs. we have barely scratched the surface, and need to cut billions in annual expenses. Each group is working through where they can save and cut, this won’t be a short process.
More automation = less human error and more stability.
Well, they said they wanted to automate more of the manual processes so I guess it naturally follows that tech would be let go...? Actually, I wish someone would explain that one.

be aware people without right skills will be replaced with cheaper workers they dont have to train; training is a big expense
Layoffs are going to last into 2021 and possibly after that. BNY Mellon said theirs kept going on and on while Chuckles was there.
lol, what, are you hoping that if you don't get laid off in 2020 that you are free and clear? Lay offs until the end of 2021 at least.
Rumor has it the 5th Monday of the 13th month of each Tuesday, on the 15th’ish.

I think we have a couple of years of pain before things stabilize.
That's my gut feeling, I have no insider info - I am just looking around and see problems - it will take a while before things better.
Someone mentioned marketing would have layoffs. No idea if true.
