Thread regarding BP PLC layoffs

I still like my job

I'm almost ashamed to admit it, but I still enjoy my job at BP. I'm scared of layoffs not because I'm afraid of ending up jobless, I'm confident I can find employment within a few months, but because I don't want to leave this place. I'm thinking I got lucky with the people I work with, as well as my superiors, all of them being great people. And I'm not sure I can get that like twice in a lifetime. I can't be the only one who feels this way?

Because sanity and mental health takes years to achieve and sadly bp would never be there for you. Same as beaten spouses become dependent on the assailant either emotionally or physically. Seek freedom.

Building tenure is not easy. Starting over is a daunting prospect, for certain.

Agreed that it’ll be hard to find another job, especially one comparable. First off, job hunting takes literally months from when you first find a job posting. And BP does compensate much better than many companies. Finally, if you’re attached to oil and gas, it could be years before you find another O&G job.

You're not the only one who feels that way. I count myself as blessed because I was able to explore opportunities within BP which had the backing of my supervisor and his supervisor. The most unpleasant moments were those that came from BP's optics sensitive executives. They would dictate orders and directions for us. In a vast majority of the time, those who did the dictations would threaten us with job losses. The orders made no sense, and we all had to comply. For those who are retained, the months ahead are really bad because everyone is scrambling to find how you can adapt and contribute. They don't give you time to adjust. You're judged immediately. I pray for the best to happen to you, and I hope you're retained and able to adjust.

You are confident that you will find something comparable to bp quickly. That’s not realistic. The job market is tight, and bp compensates very well. If you are entry level, you might be able to find something in a few months, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

You're not alone. For all its faults there are still good pockets / depts in BP to forge out an enjoyable career.

You can / will find the same elsewhere though if needed - have no fear.
