Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

8 Signs of a Toxic Workplace

How many of these sound familiar?

  1. YOU’RE TOLD TO FEEL “LUCKY YOU HAVE A JOB.”

If you’ve ever heard this statement, it’s a major red flag. This scare tactic is a means of threatening you into staying in a marginalized position and is symptomatic of an organization that thrives on bullying behavior and control.

  1. POOR COMMUNICATION.

Do you feel like you’re left out of the loop regarding important information? A pervasive lack of communication characterizes most toxic workplaces.

  1. POOR EMPLOYEE MORALE

If you walk into work and everyone around you is miserable a la “Office Space,” then you may be trapped in a hostile environment. In this type of office, there is no enthusiasm; no one coming in with smiles on their faces and no one ever says “I love working here.”

  1. THERE’S OFFICE DRAMA.

Toxic, cliquey co-workers make what should be friendly workplace competition seem hostile and dog-eat-dog. There’s always rumors or gossip floating around the office; misunderstanding, favoritism, and infighting are the norm.

  1. DYSFUNCTION REIGNS.

Do meetings feel like a waste of time, inevitably blowing up into disorganized chaos where nothing is accomplished? Are the company’s operations disjointed and failing? Toxic workplaces are full of confusion, arbitrary deadlines, lack of focus, and a general malaise. These are symptoms of a larger problem stemming from poor leadership and low morale.

  1. YOU HAVE A TOXIC BOSS/CEO

Toxic bosses are arrogant, autocratic, hierarchical, discriminatory and systematically demoralize employees. Your boss loves wielding his or her power and showing others that they’re in charge.

  1. THERE’S NO GROWTH
  1. YOU FEEL IN YOUR GUT SOMETHING IS OFF.

When your intuition says something is amiss, trust it.

New senior leader in a town hall “if you don’t like it here , there’s the door”. Wow! Way to value your employees... so toxic.

ALL apply to current conditions at Wells Fargo.

Some people, here, mistakenly take the stance that employees are just angry because there are layoffs. That is only part of the story. But the bigger story is the sum total of the toxicity and dysfunction happening at the company, some of which is mentioned in OP’s post. I could easily point out many more issues.

Wells Fargo is a scandal-plagued corporation operating under an asset cap. We need a top-notch leader with the vision and foresight to turn this ship around. A different CEO could make a big difference in the overall health of the company. Not just the cost cutting. (No -I did not forget he’s the only one who would take the job. No - I’m not going to quit just because of this CEO. He won’t last.)

I do want the company to be better and succeed. But Charlie is not the right man for the job.
A better man would communicate more clearly and more often, would show his employees respect and gain their trust, would share his vision for the company and unite and inspire us.

Wells Fargo needs a strong CEO who possesses true leadership qualities. We’ve got a middle-tier executive with one skill set. He will sell off parts of the company and lay-off 25% of the workforce. So we will be a somewhat smaller organization that is still a hot-mess with no decent leadership.

Numbers 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 describe my department to a tee. Only difference is my toxic manager isn't arrogant but she does nothing and tries to get us to do all her work. She constantly needs help. But, you can't ask her for help with anything because her favorite is excuse is "I don't know". She is manipulative and lies alot, too. She does not care at all about anything pertaining to her job or ours.
