Nasty environment. What seemingly was a sad and unfortunate thing to happen to me (being laid off) I’m glad to say I’ve on boarded elsewhere and hope to never turn back.

Some observations moving to another industry:

  1. My oh my - THIS is what onboarding should look like. BKR has the worst onboarding process I’ve ever seen! Completely different here
  1. Everyone outside of that world view the Service companies as jokes. The second you say Baker... people chuckle. Even in Houston, it’s a joke. Even more than SLB and HAL are

Looking from the outside in, after being let go, all I can say is that the cost cutting measures are paying off for now. Stocks are up so I’m hoping the tide turns and eventually the company can absorb up a few folks. Albeit I’m sure the spots are reserved for new grads 😢 and not us old folks.

Hang in there guys, we are all in this storm. Maybe different boats, but same storm. It shall pass

Theres not much to discuss really. Less work coming in than going out. How does any company deal with a situation like that? Current climate=bad future = who knows but by all accounts doesnt look good. Hanging on is all we are trying to do. Hoping for better days ahead. The manner on how we are dealt with regarding redundancy is the norm,, the communication to remaining employees not so much. Can only reduce head count and try make believe cost cutting initiatives for so long.. sell assets etc etc. Bh has got a quarter at the most if work dont pick up its done.

It would be nice to have at least some form of genuine discussion about the state of affairs within the department at least. This secrecy and angst are difficult to cope with day to day.

How little we are valued. No human element to this, the managers have no spine, and HR should remove human from their title. They aren’t here to protect the employee

Ok the MD maybe hasnt got much to say ...as he could be kept in the dark as much as the rest of us (doubt it) but to say NOTHING not even a slight attempt to keep moral up is just sad.
Think yourself lucky you aint had the tap on the shoulder yet lads.. as some of our brethren gonna have a hard xmas this year best of luck to you all and happy standrews day

I'm interested to know if any managers were affected by any round of redundancies. I left BH a few years ago and I remember very vividly that no managers were affected then, but everywhere I've been since its a level playing field. At my current workplace for example, the whole workforce was included. I've seen managers and director level all go.

That's how they do it...
Divide and conquer...
It's a deliberate way of avoiding mass protest or conflict on the shop floor...
Your taken into office through one door and you leave through another avoiding speaking to anyone on your way out...
Cloak and dagger...smoke and mirrors...etc.

How are they picked for redundancy? Is it just a head count reduction tasked from a corporate decision? Is it just a plant cost reduction? Just no transparency at all. A word or two from plant manager just now would be appreciated .. the fact we are not busy is no justification for coming to work one day and noticing some people are gone etc. Whats Going on ... HR IS THIS ACCEPTABLE? Surely an even just e-mail isnt too much to ask .. even just to let us know whos not there.. helps with simple day to day tasks ..

@7lhc Laying people off is like a right of passage for managers. Think it proves they’ve got the guts to pull the trigger. Makes them a corporate warrior and not just some low level management schlub. They come to enjoy it, live of the adrenaline. Get to trauma brag about the horrors they’ve seen at the next management wingding planning session when they all go out to some regional chain steakhouse for dinner and drinks.

Trust me I've been around the block with O & G service majors and the one thing I know is that there are a lot of management figures happy to get rid of personnel...it's almost as if they become immune to having any empathy at all.
As long as they fire the loaded gun for corporate decision makers they get to thinking it's never gonna happen to them.

To be fair, the managers work diligently to ensure process is followed and the lay-off situation isn’t enjoyable for them regardless of what employees believe.
It’s tough for everyone involved

Consultation is when you talk with employees and their representatives to explain your planned changes and get their feedback and input.

Consultation must be 'meaningful' – this means you must get their feedback and input, and seriously consider their proposals.

You'll need to follow 'collective consultation' rules if you're planning to make 20 or more employees at the same workplace redundant within 90 days. This means you must consult with any recognised trade union or employee representatives.

If a collective consultation has already started on a separate redundancy situation in the same organisation, those affected by the proposed redundancy do not have to be included in a new redundancy proposal. But you should not stagger redundancies to avoid consultation.
