Thread regarding BP PLC layoffs

Silence is golden but gossip always prevails

Between 16 Nov 16 and 30 Nov all BP employees in the US will be told their fate - if they are being laid off or if they remain with the company. People who remain will also be told their new position. Because this is happening during the Thanksgiving holiday, almost all of the conversations will happen next week.

First, This had to be decided by someone in the UK. They are totally unaware of holidays outside their schedule. Very insensitive to make line managers deliver bad news to so many people in such a short timeline. Maybe they think it will be good for employees to absorb the news while trying to be thankful with family.

Second, employees will be TOLD NOT TO DISCUSS WHAT THEIR MANAGER SAYS until Dec 1. What the actual heck??? Our “People and Culture” team is clueless if they think that will happen. A bunch of amateur hacks! I can’t wait to see how they react when no one heeds their warning to stay silent. The rumors will start flying like crazy and only half the info will be accurate. id–ts.

True about the evidence comment! They don't want you talking - this way no legal issues till you leave and get a package.

The reason for waiting until Dec. 1st is that a lot of the UK folks won't find out until then. In small disciplines, you know there's going to be a lot of head counting going on. But yeah, it's a bit unrealistic to think that everyone will keep the results hush-hush. The ones that get severed will be on LinkedIn etcetera and the ones staying will likely talk to their friends...the ones who are left at least. As far as timing goes, yeah, right before Thanksgiving isn't great but at least it isn't 3 weeks before Christmas. Could the timing be better? Certainly. Could the timing be worse? Definitely.

Don't blame the evil UK, how about the US lawyers that extracted $65 billion from BP? That would have supported quite a few US jobs rather than more private jets for US lawyers.

The management making these decisions is quite spread between the UK and US , and as for planning it around Thanksgiving I don't think that thought even entered their minds , not exactly great timing for UK employee's either being close to Christmas which is when you will be shown the door.

The Transparency and keeping silent is in pretty bad faith , if you are selected I don't think they want you knowing who was selected or what the organisation will look like so if you want to appeal you have no evidence to support one as you have no idea what things are going to look like until after you've left or who was selected.

Again though management must think people are dumb or something if the minute they come out of the selection meeting they wouldn't be telling their colleagues the outcome.

As I understand it, they have to give people the notice for a certain period time before they are forced to leave. It's all business. They want this done in 2020 and with 2020 money. The timing is awful as it is right before Thanksgiving. And who knows why people need to keep this silent. Can you remain silent? I know I can't And I'm sure the reason to remain silent isn't about them changing their minds. I witness one instance in which my LM went to bat for a colleague who was let go. This LM made the pitch on a financial basis, and the BUL gave in. But that was provided that the BUL got a certain reduction in cost. As far as I know this colleague is still with BP, but I'm sure that he's feeling a lot of heartburn right now (he's in Refining). May the Lord bless you all. The day I received notification that my position was not affirmed, it took a little while for the news to break. And yes, you'll lash out at those closest to you. Forgive yourself and ease up on your family. Take all of the opportunities the severance offers you to look for other jobs. And no, I didn't take advantage of those programs, but things worked out very well. There is life after BP. They are not the only game in town. Take care of yourselves.

eventually the job market will turn and improve and then you will witness an exodus to the door (by choice). too much celebration of low margin business....we wont ever be a NextEra like company. Regarding notifications during Thanksgiving week yes the UK is tone deaf much like nothing gets done in the UK during the month of August.

It’s always the same set of rules, not sure why the management insist on keeping things quiet, I suppose it’s incase they have to change their minds and they want to avoid looking like the id–ts that they are.

This is helpful information. Thank you! My line manager hasn’t told me the timeline or process yet. I feel like we are in the dark and a lot of people will be surprised next week. Even though we all know the notifications are coming soon it would be respectful for our leaders to tell us the timeline and process.

Typical Americans think everything should revolve around them. Learn to follow rules like civilized people. It’s not too much to ask you to wait a fortnight to talk.
