Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Young'n prospects?

I'm a recent csap grad in emear and I have no idea how to make heads or tails of this. Seems we did reasonable considering the challenges of covid. Should I start looking for another job? Take the 80% (I could probably do my required work in 3 days)? Ride it out and hope for the best?

Don't think that csap will make you safe. Ask those who graduated from it in 2009/2010 - kicked to the curb.

Ask the people who were told they were fine, only to be backstabbed and let go. Ask the people who were told they should be grateful to have a job at such a fine company, to work extra hours to make sure they don't get let go - only to be axed a few years later.

Ask the people who were cut in 2016 for no reason other than a % must go from each team and they fell at the bottom, even if they'd never had a bad performance review.

Cisco will shaft you. They do not have your interests at heart. Get out fast.

Learn as much as you can from Cisco, put your CSAP knowledge to use and absorb it all like a sponge. Then leave and go somewhere that has a viable long-term business plan and lacks the annual layoff merry-go-round. Cisco has no loyalty to you, you're a resource. Treat them the same, do your job well, build a network, and get out.

Take the Job, Cisco might be flawed but its still a good place to be and full of good people. Also the market is going down, we are looking at a depression so don't turn down a pay check. Also being cheap leaves you as last on a layoff list. Be cheap and productive and you are a lock.

Don't even consider the 20% pay cut. The reality is that this is about headcount. Cisco is a buyout company and wants to keep around a specific head count level. As they buy more companies, heads have to roll. Taking a 20% pay cut saves nobody. It is an absolute scheme

I graduated a year ago in the Americas. I'm in IT and it's certainly not great. Wish I had taken other options

Don’t worry, too early for you to worry - you’ll have plenty of time in the future.
Take on everything, soak up knowledge (but not dead end Internal stuff), work on soft skills.
And then move on.

Thanks :) I wouldn't think of mentioning leaving the company, just going to ask some vague questions about, indeed, stability and advice on what direction to look for growth. I had an option in the field (currently in TSN) basically lined up already, but that was before all this went pear shaped.

80% and later LR will be worldwide. Local mix of low performers and high earners. New grads shouldn't worry.
Use your time here for what it's worth, but don't just do internal training - listen to the market and vendor neutral trends. Good luck!

Be careful discussing this with your manager. It could move you up on the layoff list. Ask about growth opportunities and long term stability. Don't even hint about evaluating other options.

I'm not expecting to be a lifer, but Cisco pays relatively handsomely this early in my career from what I've seen from friends. With the current events I would prefer to have some certainty. I will definitely shop around a bit and look at alternatives, maybe even retrain for more quantitative work, but I can't see that not being a salary downgrade. I have a first meeting with my new manager coming up soon so I will also discuss this with him, as well as with people in my situation.

If you are early career and in engineering, you might be better served in a faster moving industry segment with higher growth. Cisco engineering is pretty weak these days. Not sure that Cisco has much to offer from a long term career perspective.

I meant out of all the geos emear performed reasonably. I'm slowly starting to see the csap brainwashing wear off and facing the reality of our position. I've been told that this would mainly be aimed at cutting out higher grade folks, but I can't help but feel anxious about being out of a job soon, and I have student loans :)

Did reasonable? Outside of a few switches, we have no products the industry wants to buy. 12 consecutive years of layoffs is absolutely demoralizing

Where are the cloud solutions? Where are the enterprise software solutions? Where are the security solutions? We don't offer products the industry wants.
