Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Involuntary Temporary Reassignment

Back in March when all this working from home started my business line asked people to volunteer to help departments who were drowning because of COVID related requests.

Some of them went back to their regular jobs per plan after a couple months. Others have been told the job change is now basically permanent.

Now they are involuntarily reassigning workers to other roles in departments that can’t backfill positions.

Here’s the kicker.

THEY AREN'T DOCUMENTING THE CHANGES

They aren’t changing job titles or even managers! No evaluation of salary and no choice of where you end up. No conversation with HR.

We were told it’s a 12 month assignment and then we’d come back to our job. This is utter b—s— and I’m wondering how many places in the bank are getting by with this ludicrous completely illegal c-ap.

They then changed the story and said they hoped our jobs would be back. They don’t know what the bank will be like in a year. Then how the hell do you know this “temporary assignment” with my same title and zero documentation I’ve gone anywhere will last 12 months??? Cause records still show my job still exists seeing as I’m still “working it” per my job title.

“We’re trying to save jobs” my a–. More like trying to piss people off in to quitting or scaring them in to leaving before they get laid off.

They do legitimately need help in the roles they’re moving people to that they can’t backfill.

But guess what. Most of the people that are being forced to move? Won’t be around for much longer anyways because most of them started applying elsewhere the minute after they were notified of their new “learning opportunities.”

Most of the people I know in the bank are looking at leaving. Wells is going under and I’d jump ship before it gets to the point you have three jobs piled on to you because they can’t backfill all the positions your coworkers are leaving. Or you’re forced in to a job you have zero desire to work in to cover someone else’s c-ap workload they jumped ship to leave behind.

Sorry to hear that you, and other Wells employees, are going through this. I wouldn't like it either. It adds to the notion that you are “just a number” at the bank, rather than a valued unique contributor. Having said that, sometimes you just have to make the best of the cards you’ve been dealt. I think someone here offered good advice to look at it as a learning opportunity. Build up that resume and then get the heck out.

You can learn a lot from a bad boss or bad management. A bad boss provides an object lesson on how not to handle situations should you become a manager yourself down-the-road. You have to learn how to self-motivate since you’re probably not getting good direction or encouragement. And you’ll need to develop sharp communication skills, and strong Inter-personal skills to survive a bad manager. I had a bad boss my first 10 years and now am confident that I can “do the dance” for anybody if I have to. Best wishes.

Not fun to be involuntarily re-assigned when you enjoy what you do and aren't interested in what you're being asked to do. That said, there's nothing illegal about what you described. Unless you have an employment contract you're an at-will employee. The company can change your employment status, title, salary, reporting manager, and/or job duties at any time (as long as it does not do so for an illegal reason, like to discriminate or retaliate).

It is helpful to make sure you have a current list of your essential job functions. HR keeps track of those through the job description attached to your title. If you believe your job duties do not align with your job description, open an ER eForm to ask for help. The Americans with Disabilities Act requires that an employer identify the essential job functions for any role- these are the functions you must be able to complete, with or without accommodation. It only helps when you are requesting an accommodation, but it is good practice from the company's perspective to make sure these are current for ADA compliance purposes.

Quit freaking whining. Wells Fargo is NOT a prison, you are free to leave at any time. Still keeping you employed but that's not good enough. Smh

Check the HR manual. There is a timeframe where your former position is secure; beyond that, it's not. As I recall, it's not a long period of time. Meanwhile, you have an income and benefits.

You could also look at it as a new challenge. Embrace the change, become a top performer where you got moved, learn some new skills or perspectives from that group, grow as an individual/team member. There are always choices and things become what you make of them. You never know who you might come across in your new role, and having a poor attitude, and because of it a poor work ethic, will only reflect on you.

I started as a permanent Wells Fargo employee many years ago. Under this one VP job title that has not changed over those many years, but my job function and my Managers have changed multiple times. Got a couple of raises during it all. Still there with the very first job title. I am highly technically skilled and don't care if I stay with the same job title as my job and Managers change over the years. I just stayed in the same job position and they just keep reassigning me to whatever needs to be worked on at the time, under what ever Manager is in charge at the time, in whatever department the job is assigned to. Never had to apply for a different job at Wells Fargo to get a "different" job at Wells Fargo. It has been fine by me.

First, I don't like the direction our company is moving. I have been a top performer multiple times and get nothing less than a 4 (dependent on the year and how they play with evals). I also think that I am more than likely on the chopping block and it's very frustrating.
For those folks being moved around. Do they like the new role? Maybe, or maybe not. Do they get to maintain the same salary and not get displaced? Yes. It's not a bad thing.

Honestly, I think it’s nice for them to do this during the pandemic to save you from being unemployed for half a year/ a year or even two years, depending where the job market/economy is heading and where the pandemic is going.
Many people here say they will have better values and can easily get a job elsewhere because of their experiences and degrees. This is probably true before this big economy collapse. But right now, I would say good luck to you on your leaving. As far as I know, even the biggest tech companies are cutting the number of new hires. So I am really curious why you all still complain so much when you can save your job? Grow up, kids.

It's called redeploying workers. Idea is a person gets to keep working but is doing something they normally might not do. This is better than being laid off but I understand your frustration. Surely the bank won't lay off a bunch of people from your area only to hire in the area where folks have been temporarily assigned to. Short term win but being redeployed means your area doesn't have enough work so I'd start looking for a new job.
