Thread regarding Cengage layoffs

Be real

Look. I’ve been following along with this thread for awhile. I for one, was someone let go from Cengage during a lay off in the last year... am I bitter? Not. At. All. It seems like there are so many people commenting who are jaded by the company and want to see it fail. At the end of the day, the people who work here are good people, and why try to instill fear that their whole career is going to be over soon... let’s say it is, you will survive and life will be ok. I learned I was unhappy at Cengage, and there are so many other jobs out there where you will get paid more, work less, be respected by management, peers and customers. I don’t think you realize how toxic the culture is at cengage until you’re out, but no matter what, everyone will be fine. Stop trying to spread fear ex-Cengage employers, if it’s legit, share, if not, find better things with your time.

If coming here makes you nervous or anxious then don't. There are a million other things you could be doing.

It’s clear that ed publishing is roughly where music recording labels were 10-15 years ago. The companies aren’t going away anytime soon but will continue to shrink. The money just isn’t out there as the former big 3 aren’t able to corner the market anymore. Enter at your own risk.

Let's see: How many bankruptcies so far? Distressed debt rating? Entire industry in major difficulty? Internet disrupting things? What are folks expecting these days when they go to work at a place such as Cengage, McGraw Hill, or Pearson? The 1980's are over, am I right?

Same. I was let go within the last 2 years- honestly best thing to happen to me. Cengage grossly under pays especially for the amount of work and unrealistic expectations they put on you. My team was great, but Im making more, just as much flexibility which is what I did like about cengage and was afraid I wouldn’t have again, and no fear of the next lay-off around the corner. I don’t think they’re transparent and their layoffs are frequent and a lot of times learned about here before any management source. My advice- get out of publishing, it’s a dying breed, you will be happier, have better pay, and can put the anxiety of what’s next to bed.

I’ve worked for companies in several different industries. Cengage has been neither the best not the worst place I’ve worked. That said, they do tend to arbitrarily lay people off as part of their standard way of operation more often than any other place I’ve worked for. But it is a hell of a lot better than working for an insurance company. Believe me. They won’t lay you off as often. But you’ll wish they did.
