Thread regarding Bed Bath & Beyond layoffs

Asms

So basically the remaining asms are getting a phone call tomorrow giving them the option to quit or take a pay cut and be a supervisor making 23.75 an hour at 45 hours a week.
This would be a big cut for me and some of my peers. So they are screwing over the people who run their stores. Go eff yourself BBB. I’m done

The 45hr dept sup will be scheduled 47.5 to account for 30min lunches, unless your state requires a different break/meal time amount. So with lunches you would work 45 hours total. The SM has to have DM approval prior to any hours worked over 45 by a dept sup. I’m sure most managers would still try and work the 50 hours to make up for lost money but you know the company will prevent that.

They won’t stop until everyone is PT other than the manager. You all need to be updating your resume and honestly getting out of non essential retail!

This right here is part of the problem! I started with the company 15 years ago part time and worked my way up to ASM/ ops. In that position breaking down my salary I was only making $19.22 an hour! After about 5 years in the position, after the first layoffs and seeing the writing on the wall, I decided to step down to full time. Best decision I made with BBB. BBB boomed about 15 years ago and now 90% of those department managers they hired them are long gone, never even made it to ASMs. And now you’re all crying about 23.75. Such BS! Go ahead and find another retail position making more! HA!

I'm in an A volume store and I received my call from HR today and there was no mention of 47.5 hours, only 45 hours. Maybe the 47.5 is for A+ volume stores???

What they're basically telling you is they expect you to do all that work to make up for people they laid off, for less than what you're currently making. And they're making you think this is okay, because "oh, you should be lucky you even still have a job."

If that isn't the biggest slap in the face, I dont know what is. The nerve. I'm out!

They're right. How many of us have been steamrolled over and over. Mentally and physically drained. Depressed. So much of these decisions that the company has made has been because of their own demise, but also a lot of it has to do with Covid. We had to shut down, and people stopped shipping in stores. Of course that's going to affect companies like BBBY. It has affected everyone in this country and WORLD.

What you naysayers and people who look down on unemployment benefits don't realize is its NOT the easy way out. It's pure SURVIVAL. Imagine being demoted after they got rid of most of your key staff. Now what? You're left to do the job of everyone who was laid off. For less time than you were able to do it before. For less money than you were making before.

How is that possible to do that without going absolutely, mentally crazy and physically exhausted. Think about the long term repercussions that would have on your body, the stress is causes not just YOU but your family.

And why should you care if people file for unemployment this way. Do you realize that we've been putting money in these systems through a little thing called TAXES. And that it is our right to this money? Like I said before, people fighting for crumbles and sc-aps and they're blaming each other when we'real just trying to survive.

Its not scamming the system. It is what it is. We're all dealt this card and we need to remember our rights and use programs out there that will help us and our families. Stop demonizing people who need help.

Here is the thing with the current laws and unemployment. Yes, before, if you refused work or quit a job, you couldn't get unemployment. BUT, because of Covid-19, there are exceptions. All you have to say is you're quitting due to mental or physical stress from Covid, and you will get it. If you have an underlying medical condition, can literally be most things, you will be eligible even if you quit.

How do I know? Because I was able to get it with that exact reason. I had a history of asthma, AND I love with a person who is high risk. Other things considered high risk are diabetes, heart disease, and immune disorders, you can even make the argument of being mentally incapable of working due to stress and depression caused by Covid. As long as you make sure to add "Covid-19" to your claim, they cannot deny it.

I worked at a financial institution after BBBY and our boss had us apply for unemployment because we lost $$$$ due to hours being cut. Even people who were still employed were eligible to receive unemployment.

why would u be eligible for unemployment when you are quitting and REFUSING a job SMH

I don't think anyone can confirm for sure because unemployment eligibility is based on your states requirements but BBB stated they wouldn't challenge your application so I would certainly try. I wouldn't say it's a sure thing though.

Can anyone confirm for sure,if you are ASM50 and given option, and take severance, are you eligible for unemployment?

Not all ASM’s are getting dropped to Dept Sups. A Volume stores are not losing all of their ASM’s. These people will be scheduled for 47.5 to accommodate 30 minute lunches. They will not have a change in hourly rate only hours unlike those dropped to dept supervisor.

This shouldn't surprise any of you! It was a matter of time! We all knew eventually it was coming. I timed my resignation during furlough so I would get the 600. 00 a week while finding a job! I have a FT and PT job and LOVE them both. Best wishes to you all! There is a better life for you out there you just have to prepare for the change!

How I understand what happened is the asm50 position was eliminated. The stores who had a profile to support an asm at all were told the position is now asm45. This is what happened when salary asm went to asm50 (the position was not eliminated - just changed therefore no severance package)
The stores whose profile did not allow for any asm45 gave the asm with the most seniority the option to take the demotion and hourly wage cut or take the severance package. Any asm remaining at the store after the allowed amount was let go- therefore a severance for them as well

ASMs at my store told demoted to dept supervisor, 45 hours and a pay cut. They wouldn't find out the pay cut for at least a week but would have to sign and agree to it in 48 hours. OR take the severance.

I'm ops asm. I was told 45 or quit. They didnt discuss money. Said HR would call today. Just said my position wasnt eliminated. I would have taken the severance in a second. They are keeping us because we are the few that know ops now

So all Ops ASM’s are not getting the lay-off/Severance option??? Is it just affecting Merch ASM positions at the senior level?

I'm so confused as an ASM being dropped down to a 45 hr dept sup. My SM said nothing about an hourly wage pay cut $$
Then there are post saying dept sup going to $21
I'll get my call today, and see.
Feedback from anyone else??

If this is true do we try to do a class action against them. They have lost those in the past. That is why the asms got changed to hourly.
They really have sunken to a new low. I thought the old leaders were bad these are worse.

If your in a store like mine where we have 5 FT people including the store manager they arent laying off the asm. They are keeping them but forcing them to take a pay cut. Or the other option is quit. No severance. That's it

I guess my question is would this be quitting due to no fault of your own and at least be eligible for unemployment while transitioning jobs. Because yes this is BS. And I'd love to just say bye. Most companies offer severance for these types of decisions.
