Thinking about applying to other jobs internally. To the managers with direct reports out there: Will my manager see that I am applying for other positions?

This is what happens in Verizon. If you are in the current position for at least a year without any pay increment other than annual pay increase then you don't need manager approval to apply to positions internally. but they receive a notification. So better you talk first and let them know you intend. Many managers do politics and don't let good people leave and that's reasonable because good managers don't want to lose good people but what if the manager hold u from applying and he himself leaves. In my 3.5 year career, I have seen 3 different managers and 2 senior managers but they didn't let me apply internally and kept pushing it. I thought of taking it to HR because there is no way for me to escape . They care about their own career and keeps changing teams and want to keep hardworking smart people at the bottom of food chain. Not all teams are like that though..
I would always ask the valuable person what I could do to have them stay. In the past that wouldn't matter much, because my team members were well known around their peer organizations, to the point of promised promotions to leave. However, as time went on and hiring freezes became the norm, internal head hunting pretty much disappeared, which caused my interview skills to suffer lol.
Yep, it's an instant email to your direct manager. I've seen it go both ways - they're p-ss-d that you're looking to move out of the org and treat you badly or they're scared that you're looking to leave the org and treat you better via a "promised" future promotion or better projects. It's a c-apshoot depending on your manager.
I always supported my people when they applied for a job that was a promotion, it helped that they gave me a heads up before they applied. If they're finding out via the automated email it's a sign that you don't have a good relationship with your manager.

In my experience applying for a new job internally was a good way to finally get the promotion you should have got years ago. Only when manager was about to lose a "key" person were they willing to go to director to get the promotion to keep the person on their team.
Your manager and director should NOT be allowed to see what jobs you are applying to. How is this fair for the employee? If the current manager talks to the hiring manager and convinces the hiring manager not to hire you, isn't this called discrimination even if you are qualified for the position. ONLY HR and hiring manager (and those in the group who are interviewing) should know who is applying for the job to help guide the employee if guidance is needed. Current managers/directors should be told by the employee if he/she decides to take the offer and leave the group. A generous period of two weeks notice should be enough for the current manager to transfer the work over to someone else in the group. Managers and directors should never discourage their employees from applying for an internal (or external) job. A good manager always encourages the growth of the employee. Besides, no ones job last forever - not even the managers job. So help your employees instead of discouraging. And don't treat the employee badly once you find out they applied for another job. You're only going to live once in this life, so do some good. Help others achieve and they will thank you.

Open conversations are always best here. I recently applied for several open jobs trying for a promotion and my manager understands my reasoning. There were about two weeks when the job openings were abundant in my area of experience. So, applied for the openings that made sense and still in the process of getting interviews. Hoping the right door opens! Ended up getting nine interviews. 3 turndowns so far but I’m not giving up yet.
The manger you report to will be notified by HR via email when you apply for any job posting and will be asked if there is anything that HR should know as to whether you are eligible to apply/be promoted.
