Thread regarding Verizon Wireless layoffs

Serious union question

Would the new pay structure have changed so dramatically if Verizon retail was unionized?

I was never in favor of joining a union but honestly if the previous pay structure was protected by a contract things would not be so drastic. You do realize that over 50% of reps will see an overall reduction in pay with variances of severity. Even a well rounded honest non slamming rep who averaged 65k a year will be lucky to make in the low 50’s now. That is pretty drastic. If people decide to stay with the new norm who or what is protecting future drastic changes ? They say they will grandfather in the 40 hour work week but obviously they want more part timers going forward. IDK but I think if ever there was a time to unionize it is now. One final thought. I lost a lot of respect for the Verizon company rolling out this new pay structure in the middle of a pandemic. As if things were not stressful enough they go in throw this at us. In my opinion it should have been delayed until next year .

All of the comments are pretty well said on this post. The OP did have a very good question and is onto something. I can tell you from experience and being a union steward for a previous company that things would have been different if Verizon retail was union. Of course one store being union was not going to prevent anything ....that part is correct. If the entire retail side was unionized like the landline side is there would have been a contract that would have had to been negotiated before a major change took place in regards to how we are paid. 100% Fact. It’s a moot point now . Looking back Verizon was pretty aggressive the last few years squashing union talk and retraining leadership on how to handle the chatter.

Verizon is a business. Businesses operate for a profit and all segments of the business must be profitable. They are trying to figure out how retail fits into this new normal. Retail traffic was already declining and now they need to make changes to ensure retail still brings value. A union is not going to change anything. Just look at AT&T: their retail is unionized and it doesn't seem to matter they close stores at will.

Business is business and Verizon has to make sure everything they have is contributing to their profit so the dividend keeps flowing to shareholders. Sorry, thats life.

Brooklyn (who is union) is going thru the exact same changes as everyone else? What other proof is needed?

It's a good question with a pretty simple answer. Look at Brooklyn. The union did nothing for them on compensation. They are getting the exact same changes as everyone else but have to pay more in dues and fees because of it. The union is not the answer. And on the 40 hours, the union has no control over that either. But they will lie to you and tell you they can fix it. Even though they didn't do anything.

I'm on that is going to take a major cut. We don't have all the numbers yet, but it looks dramatically bad. The writing was on the wall this was in the works. The virus allowed them to fast track it and use buzz words to.make it sound wonderful. We are not dumb Verizon. The want people to quit, the want people to go part time. Hans is a hit man. Like a good hit man he is using distractions to do hit dirty work. Unions don't matter Verizon is working to eliminate sales people. Everyone needs a phone everyone wants a phone everyone will get a phone. You don't have to convince somebody to get a phone. Verizon has lost their way. The 5G plan on the technical side be the best but to the average consumer. Verizon has failed because Verizon's marketing is horrific. I'm a redeployed person working customer care. Now that there's a port protection pin for porting out the number of people calling in to leave Verizon is astounding. Talkin with most people. Verizon's too expensive the service isn't as good as it used to be T-Mobile has 5G and is cheaper and there's no great promotions for current customers. Just Google what Hans did at Erickson. No one should be surprised.
