Layoffs are happening in HPE

A friend of mine from HPE-Aruba has been LRed earlier this week. Says that 5% of Aruba are layed off.

I was with the company 10+ years and was working for Aruba but was let go two weeks ago. They want me to sign something g saying I understand the layoffs are not related to Covid-19 because it is a company restructuring. They will not pay out extra time earned unless I sign.
I worry this could impact my ability to get financial assistance during the pandemic. Has anyone else been WFRd and did you sign?

”It was shocking to see people arrive at 10.30am , take a 2 hour lunch at noon and leave at 4.30pm.”

Why is this shocking? This is the way successful people manage their lives. I made a successful 40+ year career here by precisely following this model. Plus walked out with a 7-figure pension/401(k).

Any fool can ‘work’ 50-70 hour weeks. And if you are paying attention, they are usually the first ones targeted for reductions. Companies are predatory... they always target the weak and desperate first.

Smart people put in 25-35 hours per week and then enjoy real life outside the company. You can get angry and criticize this reality to your heart’s content, OR you can wake up and living smart.

There are teams at Aruba with 8-10 people that are in "maintenance" and cruise mode with hardly enough work for 2-3 people. It was shocking to see people arrive at 10.30am , take a 2 hour lunch at noon and leave at 4.30pm to avoid traffic. Cloud team was a revolving door for software engineers. Data science team was a joke since none of them had worked on wifi, networking or core technologies. With Engineering and management turnover being what it is, I am surprised the company has not had larger declines in revenue and layoffs. I am glad I left when I did.

This was quite predictable. When I witnessed my first Aruba sell and implementation, I was in shock. I wondered if it really required the huge number of personnel for and extended time to pull off a wireless implementation. I was in for an even bigger surprise. They were not part of professional services on hire. They were on-site free of charge. I knew we were upside down in that deal. Then, I saw the company abandon core networking and focus solely on wireless while trying to sell a non-functional cloud solution.

Are balance sheets really that difficult? In my day, it was easy to tally total costs, generated revenue, and a balance, red or black. If it comes up red time after time, a change is needed. Yet, it appeared the company continued down the same path.

@6opz+15hn1Tb8 - anyone with 11 years of service or less gets the same. Equals about 11 weeks of pay (taxed at bonus rate) - if you have more than 11 years there is a different calculation.

Any minimum severance for someone, say, only 3 years @HPE ?

Just got an LinkedIn email from a former coworker. He is asking for a recommendation from me. I assume that he was let go. I took the early retirement package in March because HPE’s latest strategy is shifting development to India. Many employees were predicting doom before Covid-19 struck. The funny thing is that Amazon is hiring and paying well while HPE is cutting jobs and salaries. Who do you think is winning this battle?

HPE packages are even less generous. Now you get 1 day for every year you have been with the company up to 30 days of severance. Of course they deduct for the time you are in the workforce reduction phase (30 days) which means you leave with nothing. Better use the 4 week redeployment phase carefully to transition all your current work to someone else.

Yes, 5% of the Aruba staff has been cut. Some will stay on longer than others depending on what project they are working on and yes, there is severance.
