It was already bad when I left three years ago, so I can only imagine what the situation is like right now. And from reading the posts here it's obvious that things haven't improved much since then, quite the opposite. I guess I made the right decision when I decided to leave on my own...

I'm doing fine is that okay on this site?
Union gas was no better than enbridge. The racism and s-xism I've faced is beyond anything I could imagine.
I don’t know but I hate the class system. Enbridge consists of the haves and the have nots, and the two don’t mix.
Did they do a corporate restructure since VWO? Did they move departments around?
We continue to face morale challenges although COVID has let us sweep some of them under the rug. Issues will reemerge once things return to “normal.”
The "Lottery"......
Don’t forget all those that were close to retirement applied for the VWO and were denied through a lottery! There’s a kick in the teeth for motivation.
And don't forget, ask all those in the US who lost their SDO's!
Employee moral is great!
Just ask all of the people who's jobs got contracted out. (many many more to come)
Just ask all of the people that took a wage cut. (and we wont be getting that % back anytime soon....)
Just ask all of the people that took cut in their pensions and have to work longer.
Just ask all of the people who's health benefits got "Improved"
Just ask all of the people who's employee savings plans were cut in half.
Just ask all of the people that are forced to use vacation on Fridays.
I am a woman and worked at Enbridge until recently. I find it difficult to provide examples of gender discrimination because, most days, things were fine. But every once in a while, something would happen—maybe big, but usually small—and I would feel sick to my stomach because I knew that I was never, ever going to be appreciated in the way my male colleagues were. For a long time I thought it was just me. But former female colleagues have told me they feel (or felt) the same.
Enbridge continues to provide a challenging work environment for women. Land mines are everywhere and constantly trying to avid them is exhausting.
Agree. If women want to advance and to earn more responsibility, power and money, they should do things to make their bosses like them. That’s how men get ahead.
That happens but it could have more to do with likability. Bosses naturally favour employees who are more likeable. Male employees may generally be more likeable so are therefore given special perks. Women should work on being more likeable.
- “both male and female bosses tend to favour male employees and, as a result, help to increase their confidence in little ways.”
Nailed it.
Most of the ways bosses do this are, in fact, little. They will include men in meetings with senior leaders to give them exposure, they will compliment them on their ideas, they will give them the floor in meetings, they will put them in “acting” roles, they will invite them to “non-work” lunches and events that involve influential contacts, they will share helpful information, etc.
None of this mildly preferential treatment is lost on the male employees’ female colleagues, who often internalize the inequities and conclude that they aren’t as talented or qualified.
Over time, these little acts fortify men while they chip away at women’s confidence.
I’ve seen this happen many times at Enbridge and elsewhere.
How many men at Enbridge are Admin Assistants? I’d venture to say none. That tells you a lot about how women (even professional women) are viewed. They are the assistants and helpers while the men control the budgets and make the decisions. Even women perceive other women to be this way and do their darnedest to keep them that way.
I refuse to stoop to the level of bullies but at the same time I don’t let others bully me. I stand my ground and call them out on their actions.
The male-female issue is difficult to pinpoint. But I notice that both male and female bosses tend to favour male employees and, as a result, help to increase their confidence in little ways. So, when the time comes for a promotion or new assignment, the male appears more ready for it and usually gets it. The female more often than not gets stuck being the helper and not the decision maker.
I have learned from observation that the key to survival and success in most companies, including Enbridge, is to be a bully and to team up with other bullies to protect you turf.
White men (in particular) feel entitled to fake it. And they are surrounded by people who support them as they do it. Worst is, they seem to have no idea that the situation is different for women. They think they legitimately earned their success, and don’t realize that the system is rigged from the get-go for them to succeed.
Actually, that’s not all. They also have the support of other men and, for that matter, women. Men are given far more—and better—opportunities to advance and succeed.
Men fake it better. That's all it is, fake it until you make it.
The only industry that has any accountability is the criminal world.
Interesting that women still feel left out and unheard at work. Is there anything specific Enbridge can do to solve this problem or is it too deeply systemic for one company to tackle on its own?
Morale, success, enbridge ??? Which one of these is not the same as the others??
High morale (note spelling) is strongly linked to diversity, inclusion and the fostering of a culture of respect for everyone. High morale is also linked to success.
How did the original question of HOW's MORAL?? turn into a rant like all of the below? No wonder no one wants to listen to you!
MORAL seems to be defined everywhere as " I want what You seem to have, what ever THAT is, and then I will be happy ie my Morale is up"
You could get rid of every male ( who still identifies as one ) in the company, call the company AMAZON 2.0 and the place would still be a total mess.
Ladies, once you have control, the best plan to fix this mess is sell the whole thing. The buyer can cut up and sell the parts. Gas pipelines still seem to go for top dollar. Canadian oil assets, do a Trans Mountain like sale to the government since everything is in the toilet ( Basically the only buyer).
Now ladies, you are working for the government, they have to respect you, you vote. Problem solved.
??? Can someone help me move my soapbox, I'm drained.
Don’t you think it’s time for Enbridge’s senior leaders to: 1) include more women in their ranks, and 2) treat lower-level women with respect and dignity. I have been appalled on many occasions watching men at the SVP level cut women off when they are talking, ignore them, and speak over them. I have also seen them exclude women from discussions they should have been part of.
In my vast experience at Enbridge and elsewhere, men are listened to and abided by far more frequently than women, regardless of race. Interestingly enough, women often exacerbate the situation by ignoring what other women say and by giving their attention and allegiance to men. Women do this because they know that, in most cases, men have the real decision-making power and they want to align themselves with that power.
Like it or not, not all reasonably intelligent men are listened too either. It usually depends on who you know or who you are related to in this company.
To the female Caucasian: Like it or not, all reasonably intelligent men are listened to. But women, no matter their race, must prove their intelligence first. So if you want to be heard, go ahead and prove yourself. It’s as simple as that.
At Old Spectra, we had very diverse management - I don't believe it was much of a MORAL booster - but it showed that given the opportunity - everyone can be a screw up once they reach Manager level and above - and they did, screw up that is. A type of dystopian Nirvana, totally equaled screwed up - no one to blame it on but ourselves.
Thanks again for buying us, I begged to be let go and was. A real MORAL booster. 😀😁😉
If 4 out of 11 board members (including Al Monaco) being women isn't a positive step forward ... agreed 50% representation would be ideal, but 36% is moving in the right direction.
As for the ELT, I agree there is lots of room for improvement.
To the Female Caucacion: I'm sorry but can you repeat that. I wasn't listening!!
Being Caucasian, I can’t say what the conditions are with regard to racism, but, being female, I can say that the s-xism continues unabated. Not in-your-face s-xism every day, but the kind where men get the higher paying and higher profile jobs pretty much every time. And the kind where men get listened to while women get ignored. I see and experience this daily. Just look the composition of ELT and the board.
ELT!! "Layoffs and workload increase will continue until moral improves"!!
I personally think it was stressful three years ago because we all knew layoffs were on the way. However, I think employee morale has improved overall.
It’s going to go downhill once everyone has to absorb the work of 800 employees leaving though.
