Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Being laid off was a blessing

I was a Director who was laid off in the last big round of layoffs.
1st, it took me awhile to land something but now I can look back and realize it was a blessing. My current company actually encourages a work life balance and only wants you to work 9 to 5. They don’t want you to take your laptop home or answer the phone all hours of the night.
2nd, a lot of you have animosity towards Dirs and what they do but sometimes that is dictated before they got in that role. I was in a Dir role where I was able to accomplish a lot. Well I applied for a new role and to my surprise once I filled the role I was told this is a strategy position not a “doer” position. Well that stunk, this is the position I was in when I was laid off. Nike needs all positions no matter how high should be “doer” positions.
3rd, they pushed out many of the wrong lifers. Many of the people who got me where I was have been pushed out. These people were mostly part of the good old boy culture but they always have credit to where it was deserved. They had their flaws but many understood “if my reports look good and do good work then I look good and do good work” instead of taking credit for the hard work of those below them. They always made sure to introduce me up the ladder and always shared a project or campaign that I worked on that that person would recognize.
4th, if someone does not cut it in their role they need to learn to move on not move them to a new position. I had a VP who was Pres then demoted then demoted again. Just let him go.

In my 19 years in Nike, all I can say is that you are paid more for politics than work. You can s— at your work but if you have the right networking, you will sail through and be promoted. What JD said is partially correct; the other thing he nees to add is less politics but more work. Time to get rid of people who talk but do not work! The compensation system is up to the managers to decide, to a certain0. HR is only a facilitator. This results in different practices across different departments and can be pretty unfair. My take is if you don't like the company, get out quick and stop wasting your time. This is my biggest career mistake and it is too late now.

My severance was 3 weeks per year, 2 months of health ins., bonus paid out and all options stopped vesting as of termination date. Which meant 2 years of 5 years worth of granted stock. Basically worked out to a year.

Can you share what severance they offered you at a Director level? Was it based on time, band, combo? Anything extra as a result of mass layoffs?

My husband left on his own after 16 years. It became life-s—ing and we spent every weekend, every vacation, and most family time with him off in the corner on the phone with Nike business. Everyone kept saying "Nike is the best and everywhere requires this much commitment". Well when he left, he entered into a new job that had work/life balance. With this job(Pre-COVID), you couldn't even enter the office after hours or weekends because it was closed. Not one phone call after hours or on the weekend and it has been almost two years. Time off? Encouraged. He is happy for once and we have a life that isn't part of the "brand". For a family whose whole life and kid's childhood was Nike, I am telling you life is better on the other side of the berm. Don't fear it, embrace it. Take that severance and buy some freedom.

Yes, it is a blessing. Another good thing it leads to is not dealing with what seems to be an endless stupid people working at Nike. Jesus F–k Christ! How do you so many stupid people exist in one place?
