Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

I'm confused

A coworker just accepted a demotion with lower pay because - and I quote - he would have had to walk away with nothing if he refused. So if you are offered another position you have no chance of getting a severance? Is this true? It makes no sense if it is and I think it's not even legal. Did he misunderstand? Or even lie (which is not impossible with this guy?)

If you’re offered a job after interviewing and then decline it. You cannot collect severance. However if they offer you a job with a lower title and lower salary and you decline it you will collect severance.

Not all employers offer severance and YES I have been in a position where if I refused a position I would've been out of a job. Even though they let me go back to my old job which is the same low pay.

You’re severance eligible if your position was eliminated and they don’t have a comparable position to place you in.

he could go on unemployment - called constructive discharge - but you have no "right" to severance - it's a payment to keep your mouth shut - if they don;t care - they don;t pay...

Was he a supervisor or manager and was offered or told he would be an hourly associate or captain going forward? If so then he is severance eligible.

If he was a lead going to associate, then no severance.
