Trying to determine if this round is once again favoring older (and higher-earning) employees or if it's more evenly divided. Most of the people I know who have been laid off today are in their late forties or early fifties. It'd be good to know if this is a pattern or if I'm just being paranoid.

3 people in my department of 12 people. Bloomingdales corporate office. All of us mid to late 50s, decades of service.
Age 50 to mid 60 seems to be the average age of those retained at a higher percentage. Pretty much the age of their customer base.
39, 5 years.
67 and retained as were other older workers. Cuts in my area were across age groups .
61 and just shy of 15 yrs. Permanent discount not granted as even a courtesy. I will never shop at Macy’s again.

Post ID: @ord+15DVAu03 Thanks for the information on retirement. I am 62, and before the store closures happened, I was thinking about retirement. Per your suggestion I will call Hr to find out about retirement benefits. Retirement benefits were not mentioned in any of the notifications I have seen on insite or in my email. I suspect Macy's is hoping very few will ask about it.

Look at all the amazing people, years of service, and talent that were just shoved out the door. It would be astounding adding up all the years plus free time you all gave the company. All the best!!!
41 - 12 years
What’s crazy is... in the HR world this seems to be the complete opposite! So many “older” people with longer service were saved and the younger colleagues were laid off... even with 5-13 years of service.
32 - would be interested in surveying stats on ethnicities impacted also and gender... Ideas?

I am SO sorry that so many of our Macy's family lost their jobs today. My store closed 3 years ago, I was 61 with over 33 years of service. If you are 55and over, with perhaps 15 or 25 years in, there is a chance you can "retire " from Macy's.....hopefully some of the benefits still exist......hopefully you can get paid out for all PTO that you earned last year, discount for life, and retiree medical until you are 65. You should be able to get your severance, too.....please call HR and find out what you qualify for. Believe me, M is NOT going to initiate this conversation. Best of luck to everyone, and there really IS life after M. I hope someone told you today thank you for your years of service. If not, then from me.....retired red badge.

Agism does exist in retail! It's sad but it's true.
Post ID: @alb+15DVAu03 so so sorry! They saw you as a sitting duck and the perfect opportunity to avoid age discrimination (they think). If it is a pattern it is a problem. As another poster wrote, do your homework. EEOC has laws against sneaky organizations. As a younger worker, I have to be smart in my current company. They are all the same!
57, 26 year employee
37, but my whole level was eliminated across all age groups
Laid off sales manager mid 30s
Severance package my age 64 with over 40 years
Whatever paperwork you were given check the age groups. Age discrimination does not have to be broadcasted by your company. They tend to be sneaky as in layoffs because to them is the perfect opportunity. Utilize the EEOC or your state labor department. They are there for a reason. After so many years of giving your souls, you all deserve better. Use what is available to you. ASK QUESTIONS AND DO NOT TAKE ADVICE FROM COWORKERS WHO DO NOT MEAN YOU WELL, DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH!!!
ALL THE BEST!

Age Discrimination & Work Situations
The law prohibits discrimination in any aspect of employment, including hiring, firing, pay, job assignments, promotions, layoff, training, benefits, and any other term or condition of employment.
An AARP survey found that:
• Nearly 1 in 4 workers age 45 and older have been subjected to negative comments about their age from supervisors or coworkers.
• About 3 in 5 older workers have seen or experienced age discrimination in the workplace.
• 76 percent of these older workers see age discrimination as a hurdle to finding a new job; another report found that more than half of these older workers are prematurely pushed out of longtime jobs and 90 percent of them never earn as much again.
40-something. Been with company 3 years and staying.
40 years old. I was with mtech almost 8 years. Sad day.
To the original poster Post ID: @OP+15DVAu03. No, you are not paranoid in the least. AGE is a huge factor, but it is always sutled and a few younger people can be sprinkled in.
Please, please, please, the EEOC is there for a reason. Speak to someone, please.
50 something and I'm staying.
