We are reopening our store this week. I have worked for JcP for 10 years as a supervisor and they have screwed me pretty much the whole time. From years of raise freezes to the constant instability. I will be graduating with a degree in a field completely unrelated soon and was planning on only staying until the end of the year anyways. When we were furloughed Jill stated that we could wait up to 30 days after store reopening to come back if we were uncomfortable. I am making more on unemployment than working my full time supervisor job that I hate. I work in a small store that will probably be on the new list for closing. I feel kind of rude, but I kind of want to take advantage of the 30 days and wait to come back. I would hate to have only come back because I felt guilty and then them turn around and either close my store or eliminate my position. Any thoughts?

If they offer your job back they are required to report it to the unemployment and you would not qualify for additional compensation.
I don’t think we will get unemployment if they offer you your job
Not everyone would take the extra 30 days just to get another month on
unemployment. It may also be that someone may not feel comfortable going back right away. I am a healthy person but I take a medication to suppress my immune system. I may take the 30 days even if I can’t collect unemployment for it. I’m sure by now most associates know that the company offered an voluntary early retirement offer to qualified employees. The deadline for accepting it is 5-29. Don’t expect jcp to announce the list of store closing until this deadline passes.
The fat lazy American way would have you staying out another 30 days. Normally I would disagree with this stance but because of the bankruptcy situation go for it! It is unlikely you will be getting a severance package when your store closes anyway....if you do it will be smaller then the norm. BTW I think smaller non mall attached stores are the safest to stay open. I’m waiting to see what they do with two stores close to me in Massachusetts.
I have thought about taking the 30 days also since they said no retaliation if you do. Just concerned that If I did that they would then cut my hours when I come back.
