Given this economic shutdown, it's clear that there will be layoffs before too long.
As a remote worker, before this disruption, I was planning not to entertain the idea of relocating when "Wave 2" of the relo tsunami hits. But jobs will be harder and harder to come by, which has caused my limited-risk-appetite attitude to shift. Meanwhile, the stress of waiting for the relocation ultimatum has sapped all of the joy out of my job. It has been the biggest productivity drag, and the biggest morale k–ler.
I don't want to move, but if WF chose to expand their multi-phase relocation strategy into one phase, this summer, take it or leave it ... I think I might take it. WF would be able to progress their vision of technology transformation on schedule, they would keep those who demonstrated that they are willing to do what it takes to participate, and they could cut the rest - no messy exceptions. Everyone would have a hand to play in their own fate. And even though no job is guaranteed forever, after relocation, at least there wouldn't be the daily stress of dreading the relo ultimatum every day. Best of all, I could take my job seriously again, with a medium-term horizon. During these semi-functional next few months might be the right time to Just Do It (when moving is logistically possible again). It would look better in the press than straight layoffs, and it would blend quietly into the background of everyone else's layoffs.
Also, I wish they could let us choose from a set of hub cities as part of the relo process. People are individuals, for God's sake.
