Thread regarding Verizon Wireless layoffs

Verizon offered me a severance package what should I do ?

Yesterday I was offered a severance package of two weeks for every year I have worked. Verizon has been very good to me and I enjoy (enjoyed) my job very much. The problem is that I am asthmatic and would not be able to be redeployed to a store if a mask was required. I also did not fit any WFH duties since I do not have internet within my house. There was really no other option and considering the circumstances Verizon has made this decision in the short term very appealing. The problem is I will eventually lose my source of income and health insurance if I take this package. What should I do ? I have until Thursday to decide.

But retail is falling everywhere. With this new announcement one team . Sales quotas fall off and now will be removed. Only salary and maybe a bonus every quarter based on nps meaning customer service

I was laid off April 1st of last year...no joke April 1st. This was after 15yrs at VZW. I was given a "enhanced severance" of 3 weeks paid per year of service plus I believe it was 11 or so months of full paid benefits for myself and family.

The first few weeks were good. Then the worry and unknown started in as I had been there so long I didnt know what else to do. I had started in retail, then worked in 2 other channels. It s—s finding another job, but life is so great outside of Verizon and people will treat you so much better. The road ahead will not be easy, but you will end up better for it, with a nice little check too.

Get outside of your comfort zone and go be happy elsewhere.

If this is someone who uses FML a lot, take the package! We need people who can and will show up to work that want a job no matter what. I see so many people declare "I'm stressed" and go out on leave every few months. Get gone! Be an adult!

Yes whoever posted below me is correct. It depends on the state. For example, in California you are able to file for unemployment if you accept a severance package. I don’t know the rules for New York though.

@4wca+14Rq2hrF Plenty of people who took the VSP got unemployment. All depended on your state. And they didn't offer the 3rd week to compensate for that. They offered it to entice more people to go. And it worked.

Keep in mind if you do a voluntary layoff you most likely will be denied any unemployment claim you attempt. Two weeks severance for every year of service was the standard payout in the handbook when I left at the end of 2018. At least at the last layoff they gave us a third week for every year of service to compensate for the unemployment that we were ineligible for due to voluntarily leaving the company.

Yeah so you are basically saying you are laid off because of a health condition? Did you ever have fmla because of it? They cant lay people off due to a health condition. If this is true, it sounds like a package was offered because you didnt want to play ball. Internet is 55 to 75 a month unless you owe money to your local provider and cant pay it.

Verizon is not going to offer you a package based on your health... “ oh, here a severance package because you said you can’t wear a mask” No, they are going to tell you to go back to work and if you feel you can’t then they will expect you to quit. No one is getting laid off! If they were going to do that, then they would of done it by now. They won’t lay anyone off right now because of how bad it would look. They will wait til next year.

@jvs+14Rq2hrF With unlimited data plans and many gigs of hotspot from a phone or tablet, why would “everyone” need home internet. I don’t

I don't know if this is factual or not but I will defend the poster about internet.

First off jetpacks and hotspots do not have enough bandwidth in many areas to permit a work-from-home option over them.

In my area there was an employee whose spouse lost their job during this pandemic the spouse was the money maker and the family decided to cut many of their expenses including internet in the home they did this after they filled out the work-from-home survey.

When they were selected to do working from home customer service they informed that they no longer have internet. The company said providing a jetpack is not an option. And I don't know what happened after that.

I do find it hard to believe however that someone with a medical condition would be given an ultimatum such as take a severance package. It could be the way the company wants to get rid of this person and if she/he accepts that package the employee has no right at that point to fight their decision.

So, how many years do you have? Don’t ask for advice if you don’t give all the information.
Two weeks pay for every year but you don’t say how many years, lol.

Hard to believe because it's not true. No one doesn't have internet in NYC.... You know we sell hotspots right? You know they are giving out true unlimited hot spots to reps with out home internet.
If you had said you lived in the middle of bum f— no where you would have had a chance at getting a few people.

i work in the NYC area and this person is a solutions specialist in my district. Why it is hard to believe given the circumstances I don’t know but the reality is it was offered to him. 100% confirmed. Do I agree with it ? Honestly it is someone who uses FMLA a lot so no love loss there.
