I was laid off in 2018, and I come here from time to time to check up on my new company. Sometimes I stop here.

I really feel sad about what's going on and I wish you all the best as you navigate through this mess. I hope things will improve soon.

Good luck and godspeed!

I'm sure thats the case for the group you speak of (TLV/PN). I know of other departments where its a mixed bag (salary vs. true job elimination). And to answer another poster : Chicago and LA were impacted as well.

What’s the news out of LA and Burbank and any idea if they are honoring union severance deals and seniority.

pseudonym,
I'm sure it was a factor in 98% of the cases. I feel for those that are staying as f—ed up as that sounds. They have a sh– storm that they will not be able to handle in the coming days. PN/TVL was already a lean group. Now it's a freelance crew leading a freelance crew. There is going to be growing pains for the group.

Was anyone outside of NY let go?

re: the PN and TVL folks being let go based on salary - remember that before all this Covid drama, there were suits in the building, McKinsey specifically, reducing people to numbers on a spreadsheet. I'm sure it wasn't a factor in every case, but salary was definitely a deciding factor for some.

Half of Paramount Network and TV Land’s promotional team was fired. The head as well as all VPs, all editors, half the design/animation team had a ‘separation’ from the company today. Firings were completely based on income. From what I’ve gathered, no one from PN or TVL was consulted on who should retained or let go. Viacom’s practice of hiring foreign workers who need visas to stay in the country were saved based on that they work as de facto slaves and their salaries are much lower than their American counterparts. This is not meant to disparage them. They deal with the hand they are dealt but let’s be honest, Viacom abuses the situation of new American workers to their benefit which is detrimental to the free market this country is so proud of.

God bless all of us. He offers a package. A new Heaven and new Earth. I’m grateful for and praying for all of you. I’m going to pray so much for the lost leadership and their need to lay down their big bales of booty and head for the narrow way. All that’s really left here is content, which is what they wanted in the first place. Not just owning the screen where people pay to park and watch, but owning the content on the screen too. So I ask you my friends still swilling in the predate pond scum, if you were a dead drive in movie screen without a content worth parking to watch AGAIN, what content would you look like? I for one, would be something fresh and clean and pleasing to our creator. Radical.

They can’t think of anything new and just piggyback off of existing ideas while other networks and streamers deliver new stuff. Don’t get me started the the atrocious TRL reboot. The person who created the list of “hits” deserve a gold medal.

The calculus is not clear. Until HR frees up to speak, it’s hard to determine how many weeks = a year of unemployment.

Can anyone shed light on packages? 5 years with the Co. gets you...10 years, 20 etc. - What's the model?

I’ve been at Viacom for a very long time (17 yrs). long enough to see they’re up to their same reprehensible tactics. The first to go are usually PERMAlancers who aren’t covered by equal employment laws and are given no severance. They’re then quickly followed by many entry level employees, namely assistants and coordinators. Those in the latter group tend to be people of color so there’s a double whammy as they act as the “diverse” head-counts in departments.
Lastly, older staffers are always on the chopping block. Age discrimination remains a real problem at the company. If you hit the 15+ year mark, you’re on borrowed time. It appears anecdotally that all three groups have been hardest hit again in this ‘reshuffle’. This is why unionizing is important. There should be transparency on who exactly has been let go so Viacom, Bob, the board and Shari Redstone can be held accountable.

We should ALL be reaching out to reporters so we can expose Viacom’s mistreatment of employees. Journalists aren’t capitalizing on our grief, they’re trying to hold a company accountable for laying off hundreds during a PANDEMIC. Bob announced a $100 million COVID-19 relief fund to “help employees” when in reality it just looks like a tax write off. Project based employees who were working for years without benefits were laid off with zero severance. This company could have done better. Someone needs to shine a light on all of the empty promises. If the media doesn’t shame them, who will?

Genuinely curious, but is the news being on this a bad thing? If anything, it might hold more companies accountable for handling layoffs knowing any bad moves will land them in the court of public opinion.

Be careful of reporters using this thread for info. One already identified themselves earlier, looks like another may be asking about the severance packages below under an anonymous post. My heart goes out to all impacted today, especially my former family at CC.

Below someone wrote “ Ive heard they are providing extra severance and benefits than they normally would so I guess if you’re going to be laid off this is a good time.”

Can anyone who has been laid off today speak to that? What kind of packages are being offered? (Eg. Weeks of severance for each year of employment?). Thanks.

re: Jules – yes it's certain there will be more layoffs in a month or so. No, it's not certain there will be layoffs tomorrow – that's too speculative considering corporates tend to perform layoffs in compact waves

There will probably be more tomorrow as well as later in the month. So, it’s not over yet. Much of these eliminations were planned before pandemic.
