I received my first unemployment payment today. The amount was larger than when I was working full-time at Follett. Some of my co-workers are still on the job......with a paycut. I think I have a full 13-week run of these expansive unemployment payments. These are crazy times.

“Hi, we laid you off, but if you don’t go back to work then you need to quit.”
Yes, refusing to go back to work is breaking unemployment rules. But this whole “they’ll ask you to quit” logic is dumb. If they wanted that leverage they should have never “laid off” to begin with. There are other ways this could have been handled.
But since they did take the lay off route...How about you don’t want to go back because they’re still failing at figuring how to keep stores in stock with the essential supplies? They have shared that 14 people within Follett have caught COVID. Was it caught at work? If yes, it is probably because they’ve failed to provide these supplies in a timely manner. Concern for safety seems like a legit reason to not go back to work when other company’s are clearly doing better for their employees.
If you are excited about making more by laying on your a– all day instead of working you are part of the problem. Follett is what irbid but don’t blame them for the situation and don’t celebrate the extra unemployment pay if you don’t want to work.
By the way if you are recalled and decline, they can ask for your resignation. And then you get NOTHING and deserve it.
If you have a reason why you cannot return you will still get your unemployment. Do you have children that are home schooling? Or you take public transportation and therefore can't get to your job? Are you under quarentnie?
If you were getting healthcare through Follett, they are paying 3 months of Cobra coverage. Not paying for health care is a big reason full timers are making more on unemployment. If you decline to come back if they offer, will they stop the Cobra support? If so, the extra money you get will go to paying for healthcare on your own. If you decline, would they take you back after the 13 weeks is up? Or are you going to look for a new job, along with millions of other people? Short term versus long term considerations.
The extra UI funds are nice but it's all being socked away because we will not be returning to 40 hrs a week. We will be lucky to hit 30.
What s—s is Follett doesn't pay most of us what we are worth. All the c-ap we are suppose to do on a daily basis while being "hassle-free" is exhausting. Students don't want to work so hiring temps for rush is difficult but no OT or OT is limited to 5 hours. If your store is open sun-sat 8-8 htf is 5 hours OT going to cut it with no temps? NOT ALLOWED to contact a temp agency either.
At least on unemployment I'm finally getting paid what I'm worth.
Mine is as well, but I have to return to work in about 2 weeks. I would love to stay home and make more but I also want to keep my job. Other than more money I don't have a reason I can't return.
That's what the program is designed to do. If you're paid more to stay home, stay home. You're helping all of us by not interacting with people, buy not touching surfaces and then touching your face. You're helping control the number of people this virus can infect. You're helping all of us. You're getting paid to do it, too.
follett could learn a lesson. Maybe they'll start the next shareholders (family) meeting by ingesting some cleansers for protection.
My pay is also substantially more than I was making pre-COVID.
