Thread regarding Lowe's Cos. layoffs

Can’t Refuse a Customer

Turns out we can’t refuse a customer not wearing a mask. I’m on the main registers today when a customer (actually husband and wife) approach my register without masks on. I’m in a state with a “universal masking” law. Everyone wears a mask everywhere, no exceptions. I tell them they need masks, they tell me no, this exchange is witnessed by the ops ASM who tells me to go site in his office, he completes the sale and a few minutes later the store manager and ops asm come in. I’m told that I can’t refuse to assist a customer if they aren’t wearing a mask.

So there you have it #profitsbeforepeople

I went to the supermarket in the same plaza as where my Lowe’s store is located. I forgot my mask in the car. The security guard at the door approached me as I attempted to enter. He told me I couldn’t enter without a mask. I apologized for forgetting it and went back, got it, put it on, and went back to the store. I was allowed entry this time.

As for not enforcing the policy I think I’ll make myself scarce when a customer doesn’t have a mask on. Let the go to a manager for help, see how the manager likes it.

I work in a state with a universal mask policy and there are fines and penalties for people caught not wearing them. I have a bunch of customers coming in with no masks and some employees have said things and have gotten talked to about it. As it was told to me basically Lowe’s policy is we have to put a sign on the door informing people of the policy, we CANNOT enforce the policy ourselves and we cannot refuse to help customers. If a cop where to come in and cite a person that’s ok cause that is their job but we as employees cannot do anything about it.

We don't have the mask law, Utah does not have a stay at home order, our store is packed every day now. No regards for our safety.

“approved legislation " In every case I know of it's an executive order which is not a law and thus not able to be enforced by law enforcement. Further it is not the stores job to "enforce" it. the store can certainly refuse to serve, but employees don't get that option.

Not entirely true. Some state or municipal orders have punishments of fines and arrest for violation of the orders. In those cases it would be up to the store to enforce entry restrictions. the same way stores can and have been fined and shut down for violating social distancing and customer per 1000 sq ft orders.

Make sure you document the date and time it happened, the personnel involved(yourself, and the mgmt whose disregard for your states approved legislation requiring facial protection, and wanton unprofessionalism chose to use their self perceived power and corporately endorsed)over you to embarrass you by not supporting you and your front end coworkers in these matters they also thereby chose to degrade you in front of your peers.

Reach out not only to your states health department, but the equal employment opportunities commission as well osha and the national institute of occupational safety and health and report your store and the staff involved that chooses to continue to flagrantly disregard state mandated protective measures and requirements for all those who choose to enter and shop there.

Be sure that you detail that YOU are afraid due to fears of retribution against YOU because of these matters. Make sure you detail that these actions perpetrated against you is making it an unsafe work environment not only due to management's flippant attitudes towards state mandated health regulations and guidelines to PROTECT you and your coworkers AS WELL as shoppers, but also for managements targeting you because YOU ARE notifying and enforcing those practices they have chosen to disregard.

Don't forget to call your doctor and get checked out and fill out the time off allowance corporate is providing, just as a precaution.

You are most definitely not being supported by your store management, you have to look out for yourself.

Go watch a video about microdroplets hanging in the air and then take another look at the gap under the plexiglass by the registers. All it would take for an infectious person to spread it to the cashier is moving down to use the keypad. What a joke this place is.
