Thread regarding Verizon Wireless layoffs

Verizon Has Mishandled Coronavirus Crisis

My store is currently closed (high risk). Management asked for volunteers so that employees in other locations that are still open can have an extra day off with their families. Why am I being guilt tripped into working and exposing myself and by extension my family when all Verizon retail stores should have been closed already? If Verizon wants to be an industry leader and "employer of choice," they should have minimized the risk to employees when the virus began to spread by only allowing in store pickups ("grab and go" only) and same day delivery to meet the needs of customers. But instead customers are coming in to pay their bill at the kiosk and touching/contaminating everything in the process, breathing on me while they ask questions at a distance less than 6 feet away, insist I touch their phone to reset their email or Facebook passwords because they "forgot their glasses" or are unwilling to learn "here, you just do it," requesting a new SIM card to replace the one that they lost while abroad (they may be infected and spreading the virus without knowing it), or inquiring about upgrading while telling me they just had close contact a few days ago with someone who tested positive for coronavirus (refusing to quarantine). We are not "running to a crisis" willingly, Verizon's greed is forcing us to choose between a paycheck and our health (Just use your paid time off if you feel unsafe. Excuse me??? Is it not your responsibility as an employer to provide a safe work environment?) At this point, all stores should be closed and Verizon should be directing customers online (all I've heard for the past year is "digital is the future of the business"), offering overnight shipping at no additional cost to meet the needs of first responders, and encouraging/educating customers to use Tech Coach.

I don’t think we should just close all together. I don’t think we need 3-4 of us working each day either. Only need two a day. Lock the doors, use are best judgement on who we let in and who has to go online. Verizon should waive overnight shipping. That’ll reduce our risk by a lot. Most of us would work only 1 day a week. 1 day in store 2-3 days working from home. No body is going to argue with that.

Even when we open up more stores on the 13th this should be the model until at least end of month. The amount of cases and deaths are going up not down to staying stagnant. Time to adjust our model to match the virus trend.

Truthfully the stores need to close for now, people can overnight, over weekend order a new phone/SIM card. If you can’t get your emails ask a neighbor. Our network is essential not a retail location. Hopefully this virus just vanishes...But if not.....why can’t we smart about it anyway. Now that’s something to post on About You.

I don’t for one second believe that Hans and his goons did anything for anyone out of the goodness of their own hearts. Believe this, had the government not stepped in and pretty much forced certain businesses’s to close...ALL the retail stores would be open for FB troubleshooting and HUM slamming like normal. The company that brags about “Running to the problem” only runs to it if there’s $$$ to be made.

It is greed you mo–n! Since your so drunk off the spiked Verizon kool aid do yourself a favor and use the tuition reimbursement to get a business education. If you think that vzw paying 40 hrs guaranteed is generous then your brain is fried. So many companies are paying their employees MORE money to stay home. Small businesses & sole proprietors are the ones who are suffering because they can’t guarantee their pay. Watch the news and stop posting on here.

Your misinformed and uneducated btw here is another business 101 lesson for you. Large corporations are doing everything they can to “appear” socially responsible hence why vzw is saying they’re doing A - Z for their employees. So look around you and see what other corporations are offering their employees then tell us it’s not greed you mo–n!!!

@1vhn+145ctoA2 those people are few and far between. 2 weeks ago they should've closed most stores and those that were left open should have been staffed on volunteer basis with hazard pay. Here we are now, being kept open and haven't helped any emergency situations, only contributed to the spread of this virus. 30% of population is a carrier without any symptoms based on research in China. All those who are showing symptoms now, got infected a week ago. All those who are tested positive got infected 2 weeks ago because of how long it takes to get the results back. You see where this is going?? And if one has an emergency need for a phone and happens to have no other means to communicate (which is unlikely), they can always knock on neighbors door and borrow a phone. I know I would gladly help my neighbor out in this situation.

Shipping is fine, you do not need to endanger entire families and more to get a SIM card.

Greed? You have to be joking. If it was all about greed people not working would be not getting paid or would be forced to use vacation/personal time. I am very grateful that so far VZ is making sure everyone is getting paid, working or not.
You need to remember there are people out there whose only access to someone outside of their home is through their mobile device and that person may live alone and have a medical condition. What if their device just happens to die during us being closed, should they have to wait 2+weeks to get as new one or replacement? I know, especially early last week there were a lot of id–ts coming in that were in no way emergencies or even urgent situations, but we do need to keep some locations open for public safety.

Telecommunications will get labeled as essential, with stores open no matter what. I'm former vzw, now working for a regional carrier, be happy you are getting 40 hrs a week and guaranteed commission as others are not.

@Tired of it , we are sick of people like you. I do agree Verizon is trying yet they are not equally acting.

Call centers and stores having employees infected and late action is dangerous.

So many layers of management who make up rules and guidance.

Just like in normal operations the leaders at the top get a sugar-coated reality. This is effecting how they are making important life effecting decisions.

You sales people are always whining and crying. Do the rest of us a favor and quit! PLEASE! Verizon came out with a very generous package to help anyone infected or in dire straits thru this thing. Grow up or get gone!

Verizon has been on top of this since it became a pandemic. They have closed down stores and have greatly reduced staffing with many restrictions. Compared to working in the grocery stores and gas station convenience stores as well as drive thru’s Verizon is far more precautious. I think more stores should be closed and consolidate what little business comes in and practice more restrictions. Verizon has guaranteed 40 hour work week pay and commission for this month. I do agree that if you actually are on the schedule working there should be a special pay out and commission enhancement. If we remain open going into next month the same should hold true. Again this would only involve people physically working in the stores. In any event stay safe and healthy .

Our GM told us the stores that got shut down originally were the ones were costing Verizon the most money and not profitable. These were the stores Verizon was looking to get closed sooner rather than later and may not reopen. In our district they shut down 1 store which is a mall location. Rumor has It Verizon more than likely won’t reopen it. So if you are volunteering to help out while yours is closed just remember there a chance Verizon May not reopen your store and you will be without a job. But Verizon will still have no problem asking you for help fully knowing this.

It's not about Verizon employees feeling special and entitled to stay at home, there is a bigger picture here for God's sake. By keeping non essential businesses open, we are increasing the quantity of people exposed to the virus and thus exponentially contributing to the quantity of infected people. Which will increase the pressure on hospitals which are not prepared to deal with this crisis. Not to mention increasing the exposure of those workers who actually work in the essential businesses. Government should really order only life sustaining businesses to remain open. "Essential" has too many loopholes.

Why would you think Verizon would close all locations if a retail employee tests positive? Will they start shutting down all grocery stores, Walmart’s, Targets, Hospitals, police stations etc when those workers start testing positive? Nope. Why should Verizon be special when we serve a direct need and purpose that not everyone can get done online?

Did you really just compare vzw to a grocery store?? Why do all the expert scientists, doctors and politicians classify a grocery store as essential ?? U dont see them on the news saying dont hoard/panic buy at verizon do you? You must be drunk off vzw kool aid. Go fetch hans' coffee and btw his dry cleaning needs to be picked up today too

I agree not 100 closed. Food and meds and cell phones not the same thing.

The population who is out and about is lower

Verizon needs an outlet that is open. Yet online and telephonic should be the first option. 1 store in an area open for what ever is classified as urgent need. 2 people working with 1 in store at a time.

So what about all the people who work in hospitals, grocery stores and gas stations ? At least a 3rd of the country will remain up and running through all of this. Walmart and that whole industry is hiring thousands of people right now. Why should all of Verizon retail be closed ? Reduce stores open and tighten up the restrictions even more. I don’t believe all of Verizon retail should be closed ....not if thousands of grocery and mega super stores remain open.

The problem is that each Area or Region is handling things differently. It appears as though in my territory managers are covering the stores. The problem is no one is showing up to stores and the people that are showing up have service issues that can be resolved with our “digital tools” unfortunately they won’t close until someone contracts the virus & by that time it’ll be too late. I don’t need my director to come cover my store what I need is to be safe at home. Retail stores have been classified as non essential by California governor. There are multiple communications that have come out urging people not to go to malls or retail stores. Upper management needs to wake up and understand that what is going on in the world is K–lING people. We are scared and nothing you say or do will make it better until we are at home and quarantined. Directors VPs & APs step up to the plate and fight for us.

Sounds like this situation is being handled differently all over but still handled poorly regardless of location. In my part of the country no reps were asked to volunteer from the closed store we had. And then I just read in the previous post that NO reps, only managers are now being forced to work. The managers can’t be happy about that regardless of how much kool aid they drink. There were so many better solutions than the ones Verizon has come up with. C’mon Verizon. You can do better and soon your employees will realize they can too.

You are absolutely right - you should not be guilt tripped to help open stores. This is so sh–ty, almost as bad as Amazon (whole foods) asking employees to donate their sick time to sick coworkers. Our district has all stores still open. And yep, what you described is exactly happening here. As someone else said in another thread: Verizon has been for years trying to force customers do everything online by implementing so many tools, and now that we have this pandemic going on, retail stores must stay open to serve customers in person?? Please, it's obviously greed that's driving this decision, not desire to take care of customers.
