Médiocre keeps job at UHG OPTUM

They are specifically letting go of the best employees because of higher pay and bonuses.... don’t work hard to be a 5.... it will put a target on your back. At best UHG and Optum only want mediocre services! I am a director and have been told I can’t award the number of “5” employees I have. I had to submit those names to my HR rep and VP. After that 3 of my highest performers were let go. So if you want to keep those high performers, find some way to rate them a 4. There is a bell curve and % used to award no used... a “5” can get 15% of base whereas a “4” only gets half that... so take 100k, difference of 15k vs. 7k.

I have been a 4 several years in a row and was told they are not allowed to give out 5s in my unit. Also raise has always been between 1-2%.

You still have to stay within the allotted budget. So if you are giving a bunch of 5s, you are giving others much less or nothing. What do you mean find a way? You just rate them what you want. The equations and comp planner will restrict you if needed. If your team is overpaid or high salaried they are going to stand out and prime to cut. But yes mgmt decides if your team can get by with less performing employees at a lower cost.

Layoffs and firings of good employees have occurred since 2017 and they aren’t done yet. It’s awful. They are generally higher paid and can get back into jobs faster so that translates to less unemployment payments they are stuck paying. It’s all a game we all suffer and eventually they may call your number too. No fear. Just be prepared just in case you are next out the door.
