Marv has no desire to take care of “his” store employees. That effects the bottom line. Especially the sales drivers.

Not in the least. The USSR broke up labor unions, they saw them as a threat to their power. Most notably, when workers in Hungary tried to self-organize Russia literally sent in tanks to crush them.

Soviet style communism is authoritarian while unions tend to be at the opposite end of that spectrum.

If you're going to say something against the kind of organizations that instituted higher pay, a 40 hour work week etc you're going to have to bring more to the table than an off the cuff remark. If it boils down to 'concentrated power and hierarchy bad' then congrats, you're 90% of the way to understanding the crux of the problem with ALL current human organizational structures.

That's not a reason not to have a union, it's a reason to flatten things out and spread out the power to everyone as much as possible. If you think corporations chasing stockholder value are more likely to create something like that than a union you're deluding yourself.

Costco does not need a dues grabbing union to tell corporate how to take care of their own employees.

No most Costco’s aren’t unionized. Very few, mostly in California, are.

Aren’t many of their stores unionized also? I know all of the are not, but I believe many nigh them are.

Most retail jobs pay more than the s#it Lowes and Home Depot pays. But that’s why I never made it my ‘career’.

It's hard to get into Costco because as previously stated few ever leave and not that many stores. I remember a few years back striking up a conversation with a Costco employee while selling her a refrigerator at Lowe's. Turns out we both had similar years of service at both companies but she as a cashier (at Costco) was making about $2 an hour more than I was as a Specialist (at Lowe's). And that was with me factoring in my "Allowance" which is now gone. They also qualified for bonuses and time and a half for Sundays. Add to that the hours are a lot better (10AM-8:30PM weekdays, 9:30AM-6PM Saturday, 10AM-6PM Sunday) and not the absurd 6AM-10PM (16 hours) we are doing. Customers adjust to their hours of operation while we adjust ours to match the Orange one. Also look at their total sales: ~152 Billion with about 800 stores (https://www.marketbeat.com/stocks/NASDAQ/COST/) vs ~71 Billion with ~1900 stores (https://www.marketbeat.com/stocks/NYSE/LOW/ ) and decreasing. Number 4 retail ranking vs Blowes at #9. I could go on but its starting to depress me. PS. compare total number of employees between the two and you will really get depressed. :(

No one ever leaves Costco. I think I read that the retention rate is something in the 80's or higher due to the even-handed and equitable treatment of the employees. Costco is perceived as being employee-friendly but there are financial considerations. Costco is closed on certain holidays and black Friday (I think, because it is cheaper than paying time and a half or double-time for working on those days). I think they are closed on Easter (not sure) but certain other holidays they are closed as well. I know someone who worked part-time for 10 years until a full-time opening was available.

The culture of Costco dates back to Price Club before it merged with Costco. I have heard that second-year employees earn up to $18 an hour. Costco, much like Stop & Shop pays its employees 1 1/2 times for hours worked on Sunday. Lowe's philosophy is more that the employees are beholden to the company and not the other way around, even though Marvin was quoted as saying a company's most valuable asset is its workforce and obviously it is just lip service or corporate mumbo-jumbo.

Costco CEO W Craig Janelek base compensation is $650,000 per year with the opportunity to make an additional $200,000 bonus. Costco stock price is approx. $318/share with a market cap of 132 billion. Compare that with Lowes with a share price of $125/share and Market cap of around 87 billion. Now look at Turtlehead's compensation and tell me what's wrong with this picture. One company takes care of its employees, the other d—s them around at every single opportunity. Take care of your employees and they will take care of you...very simple. Greed and stupidity have taken over and this concept is long lost at Blowes, but it is good to see their is at least one major retailer who does things the right way... and more successfully!

Costco pays time and one half for every Sunday you work. No overtime needed, just work on Sunday. Night and day compared to Blowes.
