Thread regarding Sam's Club layoffs

Is Sam’s Club a solid place for a first job?

It’s close to my place (I can walk) and I like people working there (I shop there). I am not ready for college (long story) so I was thinking about applying at the Club. What do you think?

No ..I would look elsewhere. Used to be great but there is so much low moral in the clubs now that it’s a guarantee you’ll be miserable before long. It’s a difficult job .. much is expected and nobody has a positive attitude anymore.. STAY AWAY.

Started 27 years ago and it was great. Life was good, we were respected and you could have made decent money here. There was a path for career growth.

Now, every penny is pinched and the company is going down.

Regardless of the fact that it's retail, it would depend on what job at Sam's you were applying for.
Frontend? (Desk/Cashier) No TY.
Merchandise associate? Basically an associate who works everywhere/anywhere in the club.
Cafe? Customer related food service. Like any fast food type restaurant it gets crazy busy and usually has staffing issues.
Carts? An all right job, always moving, but not so much fun in the rain/snow/etc..
Tires? Busy at certain points in the season. Not really bothered in their departments.
Pharmacy? Have to pass various tests, be good with customers, numbers, etc..
Optical? Same as Pharmacy but easier to get into.
Meat Dept? Various roles (meat cutter/wrapper), some customer interaction, not really bothered in their departments.
Produce? Easy job, fluff/stock the floor, not really bothered in their departments.
Bakery? Various roles (cake decorator, Baker) easy job. Though as a decorator you do need to have some slight artist abilities. not really bothered in their departments.
Deli/HMS? Stocks out the deli area, HMS preps premade meals in their "kitchen". Both are pretty much not really bothered in their departments.
Claims? Probably not an open spot as it's usually taken by long term associates, but this position deals with sending back returns, marking in club items down for sale, recalls.
Backroom? Again usually taken by long term associates. They deal with unloading trucks, running freight and hanging out in receiving.
Marketing? Position will probably be removed from the company. But currently contacts non-members to entice them to join the club.
Maintenance? Cleans the bathrooms, rides around on the floor cleaning machine, changes out the trash.
Gas Station? Suppose to be interacting with members, talking about credit/plus, upcoming events.

In all honesty starting out as a new associate looking to get paid the most and have to deal with less I would apply for a fresh position. We obviously get busy at times during holidays but for the most part we deal with far less and are paid more.

It used to be better, it's getting worse every year.

However, you can start here and you will learn.

Once you find out how you like it you can make a decision on how to move on.

You will learn a lot, about people, team dynamics, bad and good management styles, retail operations - keep your eyes opened and soak in knowledge.

Retail is tough, it's not popular right now and other jobs pay better - but if you like working with people, interacting with customers, having a dynamic day - you may like it here.

It sounds like the perfect job for you. Every job has good and bad points. Not having to worry about transportation sounds great, you can save some money for when you go to college.

I have been with the company many years and the last few years have been very trying to say the least. It’s definitely not the Sams Club that I was proud to work for. We don’t have enough help Ever! Between the cutting and call ins and quitting it’s very hard to the job expected and provide Member Services.
Member Service has definitely been put on the back burner due to long lines and lack of help. Home Office needs to realize what they have done to such a great company! So many great associates have quit due to All the CHAOS on the daily!

I do not recommend anyone to work at Sams club It was a great club years ago but now I would advise against it. If you like your hours being cut constantly. Changing your schedule daily. And being understaffed all the time not to mention home office setting impossible goal. Than this job is for you I would not let my children work there for anything and I’m a 20 year associate.

Retail jobs are not that good as they used to be. Overall, Sam's is better than most of our competition (Costco is even better for a new employee, they have better training).

retail, in general, is not a good environment for a first job, that is unless you don't have a choice
