Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Wells’s Fargo walked me out with no notice after 10 years of service. Excellent performance reviews. 55 years old. Just threw me to the street.

I am still an internal Wells Fargo employee, though my age is increasing. What is 65 when many of the USA Presidential candidates are 70, or close to 80 years of age? Age 65 is a young person still. Age 65 is the new 55. Ha! At my age I still act, feel, think and work in the exact same way as I did when I was like in my 40's. There is no difference for me between my 40's and 60's. No health issues. Nothing has changed since turning 40. I guess it is an "attitude", turning 40. Every single day I receive multiple emails and/or phone calls about potential new job opportunities, especially contract jobs, where the contracting companies are like begging me to come and work for them. I still am telling them I am an internal Wells Fargo employee and am not in the market for a new job at the present time. Though that may change ….

Every day I learn and do new technical and business related things. Always keeping up with the latest in technical and business skills required by my job and ace them. Same as when I was in my 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's. Nothing has changed due to my older age, except that over time I have acquired an increasingly greater number of skills and have been able to take on increasingly more complex technical and business projects due to the so many years of experience.

50 years old, received relo or severance offer as well. See a pattern. I'm sure it is just a coincidence by this upstanding quality federally owned bank and not age discrimination at all.

I was offed last Year after 6 years of ALL “Exceeds Expectation” reviews, Gold Coin and other awards. PTSD here. Nothing surprises me now. I have it on good authority that today’s releases are confined only to Location Strategy in Saul’s world. There are to be thousands cut by the end of February under the bank-wide lay-off plan. Hang on, you won’t be safe this year ... probably never again at the new Friends of Charlie & Saul’s Bank (FOCS).

Wells Fargo certainly does age discriminate. They do it by eliminating positions filled by older people, rewriting the job descriptions slightly, and filling the new positions with younger people who then proceed to do exactly what the older people did.

WF will not age discriminate. They have enough eyes watching them for other things, and could be easily caught. Why would they add more problems to the pile?

Non technical new Manager has to leave at 5 PM on Friday to take care of his kids and take them to dance lessons, or something. After just assigning me to work all weekend to resolve a "production issue". When I say I have no time to get my personal things done he says I do have time to get my personal things done, why don't you? Maybe because I was assigned to work all weekend while he was "off playing"? This did actually occur.

That is correct, non-technical manager, with no designated 'lead' on our team, though there are more experienced people....Everyone is an 'individual contributor' not working with anyone else on the same thing. There is actually no concept of team in the traditional sense. There is only a collection of isolated people that report to the same manager. That's it.

BTW It's not the technical stuff that is hard to navigate for someone new, it's the bureaucratic web of nonsense that is impossible to navigate, and is poorly documented, or if it is documented, it's out of date or just dead links on a sharepoint site that was moved and noone knows when. And for every new 'effort' it's like the reinventing the entire sdlc process, etc just for that code change alone. Just a nightmare.

@2zvo+13mmjvj9, you got a new, "non technical" manager to oversee a tech team?

Yikes.

To the "green" developer. Check out all of the free technical training classes in the Develop You site. You can get trained by taking those types of courses. There are also lot's of online free video training courses that are very good, just google for what you want to view a video on. Like "video Tableau training", etc. Everyone is busy still training themselves …. so many different things to learn about at Wells Fargo. If you have a technical Manager you may be lucky as my former technical Manager was so kind and patient to spend a lot of time training me to work on her technical projects. However when she left and I got a new "non technical' Manager it was not good.

@1nif, It's discouraging being a somewhat 'green' developer here. Some of the issues I'm sure exist in many places, but there is a lot of gatekeeping, and there is little to no onboarding process... and no desire for more experienced people to help someone new/less experienced unless they are specifically directed to do so by management.

I viewed the Technologies town hall meeting today. During that meeting they did commend a lot of Wells Fargo employees who had been with the company for 40 + years. Also the audience did not appear to have very many, if any, much younger looking employees. Some of the executives appear to be on the "younger side". It takes many years of experience and training to get to be "technical" enough to be included in the Wells Fargo Technology department.

Do you have it on video? I’m sensing a little hyperbole.

Go file for unemployment and get labor lawyer to see if you are being replaced by some rung out of college

Highly possible if the person held a position where WF was concerned that the team member would take their book of business with them.

I know that insurance is gone but this is a common practice with insurance brokers in the industry. I'm guessing the same could be said about financial advisors.

Not sure I’m buying this. I know dozens who were let go, including me. All got the same deal. 60 day notice period and then severance based on tenure.

If you were truly kicked to the curb that way you must have done something seriously wrong.

What division/department are you in?

I'm 55 y.o., too, and think WF is letting go of older workers because we cost too much (higher salaries, healthcare costs, etc.) .

So much for loyalty.
