Took the Sunday off before Christmas to do the family Christmas, and scheduled myself to work Christmas Day to give my team the day off.
Wow! What a mistake. Got the hate call today from my DL mandating that I work on Sunday, without exception.

Your heart was in the right place, but honestly it was not the right business decision. Sunday the 22nd will be one of the busiest days of the year. It is also the first night of Hanukkah. The manager should be there for a peak sales day. Christmas there is not as many customers and the manager does not need to be there. Your DL should have been on this earlier though so you could have made proper plans or adjustments
Schedules have to be posted 3 weeks out. Tell your DL to piss off!
