AT&T is terminating employees while offering them similar but temporary positions with the outsourcing companies. This allows them to legally not pay severance and deny unemployment claims. These positions are often called "year and a day" because as soon as the agreed upon time is completed employees will likely be let go from the contracting company with little to no severance. During their time at the contracting company former AT&T employees will be expected to train their foreign replacements which many find humiliating.
The article states: “They aren’t being offered severance or early retirement, and may not easily find a comparable job elsewhere with similar pay.”
Is this true? I haven't heard of any surplus actions that were denied severance. Are there? And of course, the entire ATO organization was offered early retirement (I'm in the ATO organization myself).
I'm quite aware of the outsourcing that AT&T is engaged in, but I'm trying to gauge the accuracy of the article.
This is nothing new. ATT has been doing this for more than a decade. In 2007 my software development position was outsourced to Accenture, and I had to train my replacements in India. I got another job in a different department after that and have seen many layoffs (or “surpluses”) over the years. Lots of hard working people with more than 20 years with the company let go for cheaper labor in India, Slovakia, Czech Republic, and Malaysia. I wouldn’t be surprised to see my job get outsourced in the near future, as Accenture, Amdocs, and IBM are all automating us out of a job. That’s the reality in many companies, and we all need to be ready for that day.
