Thread regarding Walmart layoffs

Inhumane GM

My husband has a severe heart condition. He has had two heart surgeries plus a lung surgery and a pacemaker implanted last year. He is an ASM of a big supercenter. The GM know he is going to be retiring in three months. He recently made him go onto third shift as he said he couldn’t do anything else on days. Then he constantly makes him stay an additional hour or two in the morning if he isn’t happy and this guy is never happy. He himself never works at night, never works any holidays, and is out the door every day by 5:01!
We spent several hours in the ER on Christmas Eve because my husband was so short of breath and he was just so tired.
Then this morning, because CAP didn’t get their job done and left a ton of freight for him and his crew to work, they didn’t get the store the way the GM wanted it and he made my husband stay two extra hours! And this on top of his having to work a five day stretch because the GM gave other ASM off for Christmas. We had to do a transmission of his pacemaker to his cardiologist when he got home he was in such bad shape.
I just want to know who can I report this guy to? How does he get such an easy life while practically k–ling my husband.

Trust me. I’ve been at Walmart for 10 years. Tell him you love him and help him through his retirement, or tell him to retire early. I hate everything this company stands for and want no part in its future business. I’m looking for a new job today, as I was told going to school to MAKE SOMETHING OF MYSELF was not going to work out with the restructuring. I hope your husband was a nice ASM. They more often than not are b–tards, so for Karma’s sake and his, I hope he was nice. That’s what he should be caring about, because the Company couldn’t give a F— about him, or any of us. You lose, just like all of us. It was worth it, don’t you think?

@12I6EBxe-5awq Oh believe me Walmart was never a long term thing honestly. I worked for another retailer and I can tell you Walmart (atleast as an overnight stocker) its very demanding vs the other retail store I was for 6 years. It was not like this though the veterans told me it use to be a more relaxed. What changed is having you do more and cutting benefits. I like to work just don't like to be exploited for bare minimum wage. Sadly also things wont get better in the long run more cuts less hours and having people do more work to keep up with profits since that is all Walmart seems to care about

As for my next job its actually a career I actually got an offer and I already gave my 2 weeks at Walmart so I am on my way out. The other job is going to pay more than double of what Walmart pays health insurance, sick days, pension, personal days, vacation hours, holiday pay and who knows what else. So believe me I was more than smart, since I been waiting for an offer for this job for a while.

This is exactly why Walmart is such a horrible company to work for!

If you are "shocked" at how things are then frankly you didn't do your due diligence before going to Walmart. I really hope you were smart enough to have done so for your next job.

@12I6EBxe-4zrw Being at Walmart for 4 months I can tell you they squeeze every little thing they can. I was shocked how much workloads they add and how much they pushed you. I honestly feel I was even stressing out (and I rarely stress). It got better as I got used to the job, I still get a little stressed here and their. I already gave my 2 week notice I am on my way out. I love the people that I worked their very good co workers, but the work loads and management is the worse of them all.

I also feel things will get worse as time goes by. I was shocked when I started no holiday pay, seems like no advancement and loads of work added to you its like none stop work honestly.

As for @Madasheck1227 go get ahold of a lawyer. This can possibly be a lawsuit of what they are doing to your husband. His health comes first don't risk health over a job its not worth it.

Honestly I'd check. I believe as long as he works until the 31st of January he will qualify for his bonus. If he can make it till then he should be good. I've been out for 2 years now so things may have changed, but I think that is the real date he needs to worry about. However, if he has any FMLA he should take it. I think they pay you for 5 weeks if you are salary and then STD kicks in. He would still get his bonus. I also worked for a sadistic GM who was more than happy to work her management team into the ground. I also had health issues that she was aware of an would make it a point to exploit that. Fortunately for me I was one of the lucky Co's who was purged and since I also had 25 years in walked away with a years worth of salary and my bonus when it was done. I so love being promoted to customer. His health will improve once the stress is gone. Either way though, the job is not worth dying for.

I'm so sorry for how badly this piece of krap company is treating your husband. Most of us here know how they operate and understand your situation. Your husband needs to look out for himself because the company doesn't care about squat but pinching every penny of cost savings out of their workers so they can prop up their next quarter's numbers and save the precious bonuses of the upper tier of management.

Figure out a way to go on leave and burn PTO until his desired retirement date. Then he can walk out the door and never darken it again.

Good luck and enjoy his retirement. Lord knows he earned it working for these heathens.

Respectfully Ma’am your husband should retire . He should do so immediately. It is clear he has reached the end of his productive working life. That should be enough. If he is three months from retirement I’m sure you have your plans in
place. He should not work another day if
he is unwell. Just advice .
God Bless,
Best Wishes

My goodness. So many nice replies. I really just came here to get this off my chest. Never figured on anyone having anything to say.
Well, my husband has put in over 25 years and is one stubborn cuss. He turned down several promotions because he helped take care of his mom until she passed and we also have a special needs son. And money is tight which is why he wants to stay for the bonus which he has worked so hard for and well earned.
And to whomever who said he must not have gotten something done - you don't know my hubby. He would stay without prompting if that were ever to happen. No. The GM had him stay because one of the young kids they hired who cant find his butt with both hands had a mess going on in the Christmas area and he knew that my hubby could fix it for him and that is why he was made to stay late, because god forbid he should have to get his hands dirty. He always gives more and works over without complaint but having been sick and having to work singlehandedly for five more shifts in a row, I thought was too much especially when the GM is so lazy and never stays a second over.
I really do appreciate the kind expressions. The company has changed so much over the years and it is sad where it is now. Young people get out now while you can, WM don't care nothing for you. Hope you all have a wonderful New Year.

Wow talk about someone who doesn’t know anything. Maybe the looser assistants at your store don’t do c-ap and it is basic job there but not at my store. They have to clean up after CAP 2, zone everything, bin everything, zone the action alleys, reset the store to what our GM calls grand opening ready. And you have no idea how this guy or anyone else busts their butt and you say that so smarmy that everyone says they do a good job. Well sounds like this GM is an ahole and it doesn’t matter. Unless you were there and saw them and know what they have to tackle, maybe you shouldn’t offer such dumb c-ap.
I am sorry that a lot of the long term people are being driven out. We are loosing a lot of experience, knowledge and experience every time one of these people retires.
I am sorry that your husband is being treated so badly. Luck to you as he retires. Can’t blame him for wanting to wait for a bonus he no doubt has busted a gut for. God bless!

It’s a pretty basic job. If he is staying it is normally because he missed some of what he is supposed to do. He should retire early, as in now.
I get the health issues, all the more reason to retire now. Everyone always says they give it their all and do their best, but sadly, sometimes it is not always what is required.
He should retire instead of waiting to qualify for the bonus, which is what he is waiting for.

I don’t know if he can draw his full pay on LOA, but if he can, you guys should do it.

Also might talk to a lawyer to see if any laws have been broken.

I assume that your husband has short/long term disability. If he does his doctor can actually place him on medical leave and then he would go through Sedgwick to file for his LOA. Once that ball is rolling and he’s been placed on leave he can use PTO time until his short term disability checks start (usually only need to take the first week off using PTO). He then has 12 weeks that he’ll be paid with his short term and if he has long term then he would start drawing from that. But it sounds like short term would get him to his 3 month retirement date he’s striving for. I sincerely encourage you to do this to save and help your husband. I myself have had 3 LOA’s in my 27 years, I was back to work within the 12 week mark but my short term checks came regular as clock work. Prayers and good thoughts to you both.

Just FYI. Overnight ASM’s work a 12 hour shift and only work 4 days. You obviously know nothing about how these guys work. Asking him to work a 16 hour shift? And then to work five 12 hour shifts? Sorry. You are just wrong.

Dont know if you can afford this but have the doc put your hubby on medical leave. Fmla requires a company to provide an employee 12 weeks off..not paid. The company is also required to keep his position for him during this 12 weeks. If he has PTO or vacation he can use it during the 12 weeks.

I don't know what you think a lawyer would do or what federal law is being broken if this gentlemen is a salaried (exempt) employee. If he's non-exempt, they can still require overtime, they just have to pay for it. Playing devil's advocate, in what world do other employees not work 5 days straight or put in overtime? I pray your husband's health holds out, but perhaps if it's that bad he should retire early. No job is worth your health.

Sounds like grounds for lawsuit, the GM is possibly in violation of Federal laws. Contact a lawyer

You can’t report nothing in this company without it coming back on you. They said they don’t but it does

That guy sounds like a real ahole. He should be ashamed but could care less as he will get a huge bonus. Reporting him will only make it worse. Sorry for you and your husband. Hope he can make it the three months. I guess he is hanging on for his bonus?
