Thread regarding Cengage layoffs

Layoffs in two weeks

Found out yesterday that layoffs “in the low double digits” will be hitting every segment in the company by early November.

To be fair, Cengage people were all over the Pearson discussions here back when Pearson went through its last downsize, laughing and mocking the Pearson folks when they were in this position. I no longer work for either organization (thank god!) but it is worth noting this for the record.

Personally, I think every single Cengage employee should have an updated resume by the end of this week. If you are not a part of the November layoffs, at least you will be prepared for the next round - which could happen as soon as Jan/Feb if the merger happens around the end of the year.

To continue working within Cengage (or a combined Cengage-McGraw) is to accept the fact that you will have zero job security moving forward. These kinds of reorgs and downsizings are going to continue on a regular basis for years to come. If you can live and perform comfortably with that in mind, great. If that prospect bothers you, it is probably best to initiate a career search now, possibly one to include other industries.

Amazing to see the Pearson and McGraw dissenters posting to stir anxiety. Its truly sad. Yes Yes we know we know a layoff is coming. So is Winter! Stick to what you know folks, not speculation. Do not let outside trolls, nor inside soothsayers create worry. Worry will not add anything to your life, but detract from the ways you spend your time. The anticipation of pain is often worse than the pain itself. Stop doing this to yourself or each other. Regain your humanity, dignity, and enjoy the blessing that today is.

To the poster that's been through three reorgs when did you start like six months ago? CL has about 3-5 reorgs a year lately.

To the poster before me, I have been through 3 restructures with Cengage. I have survived each one of them but many of my friends have not unfortunately. Trust me on this, when they talk about layoffs, they do layoffs. Folks–get the resumes updated....they gambled with CU and lost big time. I'll see you at Barlow's or whatever you want to bet me on.

100% not true. The haters on this forum claim layoffs every week and they never happen.

I’ll bet drinks at Barlow’s on it.

“What about the distribution center in Kentucky? Layoffs there as well?”

Do you mean just the distribution center in KY or other departments at CLDC? Like customer support, tech support, inside sales, etc?

The layoffs will be November 1st. No one knows the final number, but different business units will be hit proportional to how badly they missed their revenue target. The cuts will be significant. CU was a massive failure and MH needs to have scalps for the next investor call which will be right after the cuts are complete. Buckle in.

McCengage merger reminds me of 2 drunks stumbling out of a bar at 2am holding each other up.

Cengage is obviously in survival mode now. Just trying to make it to the merger without running out of cash. The next earnings call should be a doozy.

CU will not be discontinued and the cuts will not come anywhere close to 25%.

@11z2KVFJ-1rpu If that’s true than MH should be fired immediately by the board. That would be the biggest disaster in the history of the company given the investment and negative return.

Also heard that Cengage Unlimited is going to be discontinued. And I am not joking nor trolling.
Anyone else hear that rumor?

Less than 30% tells me it's going to be about 25%....that's 1 out of 4 people. That is going to mean massive cuts. Is this just sales or companywide?

We were told less than 30% across the board and that some smaller offices may close, Monterrey was mentioned as a possibility.
