Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

UAW overplayed their hand

Workers are missing loan payments and it’s beyond clear GM is not budging on temps or allocating products. GM just sweetened their offer and the union is backed into a corner because they can’t give members the guaranteed jobs they promised.

Mary was told to come to an agreement, in two days time or else.

Um yea, I have and I stand by everything I said. Looks like the uaw has screamed uncle and has agreed to a tentative deal, pending a vote. GM will get their way on both temps and work going to Mexico. Lol...I actually hope your union bosses vote it down in the name of looking out for the “working families” and stretch this thing out to Christmas.

Um yeah, you may want to rethink everything you said here, it's inaccurate.
Maybe kinda try to read and follow the news.

The fact is that the company can outlast the union. there is plenty of inventory out in the field already to move around and keep the dealerships stocked. Our lots and showroom floors here in my town are chock full of unsold GM cars and trucks. Unlike 50 years ago in the heyday of unions, the public is not on their side now and most think they’re crazy to strike when the average total compensation package is $90k/yr. Don’t blink, GM, you’ve got these guys on the ropes as their membership is starting to feel the pain. They won’t be able to live on $275.00/wk very long.

You can thank Bush and Obama, I wonder what would have happened if GM would not have received the bailout?.

The UAW “gave up a lot” because the govt made them do it as a condition of the bailout that kept GM in business. That deal also required the UAW agree to no strike in 2015.

However, the bailout did not curb executive compensation.

So, we have a GM lifer making over $20 million a year, as if the bailout never happened. That’s 300 times $70,000.

UAW gave up a lot in the last recession with Wagner. It didn't advance their standing any, by tremendously sacrificing for the company's benefit.

They should try the other tactic. Put the screws to them. I mean it's all you got until the company fully relocates outside of the states, which I suspect is the plan anyways.

Real smart - make the company you are dependent on for a paycheck financially suffer. You realize they have bills to pay too to stay on business? I understand wanting fair pay but being greedy will only land the uaw at a lower membership over the long term. This is proven in other countries that have tried the same tactics.

Agreed the uaw folks should hold out and make her and GM suffer.
Everyone at GM should get a pension too.

If the UAW can hold out until the inventory of their key vehicles is very low, the UAW can still what they want. This million dollar question is whether the union workers can suffer a bit longer to get a substantially better deal for the future. With Mary Barra at the helm, if I were a UAW worker, I would hold out for a better deal in terms of job security. She totally screwed her loyal salaried employees in February, so nothing will hold her back in moving more production overseas and closing the US plants.

GM should cut off health insurance payments again.
