Even if it's at lower pay? Do you know of an instance where somebody over fifty was laid off and then was given a chance to return in some other capacity?
Asking because my dad has been applying for positions there for a few months but was never invited in for an interview. Mind you, he is more than qualified for every one of the jobs he applied for.
Is he wasting his time?
I was laid off in 2003 at 51 and returned in 2011 as a contractor and was rehired in 2012 at 60. His best route is to come back as a contractor and try to get into an area that might be expanding (though easier said than done these days). It has always been tough to get hired off the street unless you are a recent college grad. It's easier to slip in the side door as a contractor and impress the people who can help you get rehired.

Real World Answer: It is gonna be tough for dad(50+ maybe, 60’ish-prayer needed). He has to have some connections outside of AT&T. Back about ten years, before T got its new 2020 Vision, some managers would retire (some early) and, (as the rules had it) wait six months to come back as a consultant....that was then. I knew of one personally but heard about others....consider those days unless their skill are exceptional and needed.
He can find a much better company anywhere. He should count it as a blessing he doesn’t work at t anymore. Tell him not to give up and keep working at getting hired at a better company.
Since he knows how att works. he has a better chance of working for a contractor that does work for att. hope your dad lands a job or maybe he does not want a job and is just telling you that to get you off his back?
I know of only one instance where the company rehired someone they let go.
When the big purge in January hit, they let folks go without any regard to what their skill sets were. Fast forward a few months and T decides it's time to get a long overdue project done.
Except, they managed to lay off many folks who had the knowledge on how the equipment
worked for said project. ( Outstanding job there T. Really. )
They were re-hired, though I don't know if they came back below / at / above their previous salary level.
This company is slashing jobs top to bottom. Look elsewhere, plenty of good jobs for competent employees. Even in their fifties. At&t is dysfunctional and suffering with an identity crisis. Good luck.
Unless he has a much needed skill that few have he has little chance unless he knows a hiring manager and even then there are few openings. Many jobs being outsourced. He could try the contractor route but is best to look elsewhere than AT&T, it is in mass chaos
ATT is moving more towards contractors and outsourcing, as the new employment model unless you are in HQ.
Unless maybe working a contractor, instead of a badged employee.
