Assistant managers getting the hell OUT

Was just in one of my town's stores yesterday and visited with an old friend and assistant manager from the store we used to work at together.. This is a guy who is normally extremely easy going, nothing seems to bother him, non excitable at all. But yesterday he seemed completely overwhelmed and more stressed than I'd ever seen him. He relayed to me that he's been doing some webinar interviews with a local manufacturing company, as well as aggressively applying in other areas.. He dropped the names of a few other assistants, from both the stores in our city, who are actively doing the same.

The Walmart ship is sinking, and the smarter crew memebers are scrambling for the lifeboats while they're still available.

Walmart is not well known for how it treats its employees. I’ve known that for the 20 years I’ve been in retail. They’ve been in legendary amounts trouble over the years for not promoting women equally, making employees work off the clock, cheating employees out of their overtime, etc. just google the class action lawsuits - they go back 30+ years. Bit of advice, don’t work at Walmart without understanding Walmart’s history. Don’t work there if you care about a company’s culture, and definitely don’t work there if you expect fair treatment. I’d only work there if you need a job and can’t find anything else. What do you expect from a company who has no competition.

At home office, the buyers are getting pressured to delete skus so that there is less to stock.

Word has been put out that stores are going to have less and less labor hours and the buyers better figure out how to make their mods stockable in as little time as possible.

I don’t think this is to help store associates. I think this is to get rid of a bunch of them.

Everything I’ve heard and seen leads me to believe that labor hours will only be cut back more.

PS. The witch hunt to get rid of older employees is happening in Bentonville, too. It is to the point now that nobody wants to get the badges that show your years of service because they don’t want to remind anyone how long they’ve been there.

Also, it seems like someone quits every day. It’s like rats off a sinking ship. People are fleeing.

Thanks first all for all the info James. I dont plan to stay their long. As soon as I get an offer for the other job giving my two weeks and heading out.

I am just their to do my job nothing less nothing more. I was already in another retail store and the store closed the old geezers got screwed big time. Thanks again for that heads up.

To "What is going on?' : I think the best is, you happened to hire in to a company that is on the verge of collapse—or at least, becoming vastly different (and trimmer) than it's ever been. If you stick around the biggest heat you're gonna see going on in your store will be the blatant purging of long time, older / good money-making associates. It's been sick. I've heard horror stories and I know folks personally who have gotten screwed almost as bad as the Native Americans by the first settlers here.

As for your question about 'Flexstock'? I don't think you're in trouble. Keep your head low and stay busy.

But my best advice? You're young. Get out, do better, best yet, find something other than retail. College isn't always feasible for everyone, and trade skills are very much in demand. Look into something along those lines. There really is a world of opportunities!

Hi can someone explain what is going on? I recently started working at Walmart. I don't plan to stay their, but its just for now (funny thing is I came from another retail that closed and since my city is limited and hard to get a job I only got a call from Walmart). I am a night stocker kind of crazy how nights are they said they are cutting hours dramatically, but apparently for the night workers the night supervisor said just keep coming in and getting your 40 hours.

I also have a question I heard something about "Flexstock" what is that exactly? Could I be at risk of getting hour cuts or they letting me go or offering me day time? The store I work seems in high demand its a 24/7 (their is 3 in my city the other two close at nights). Any feedback much appreciated.

There are no shortage of managers in our store,Asst,Dep Mgrs,CSM's.Cos,Cap,front end coach and others I cant even remember there are so many.Hell they are falling over top one another.And worse with a high turnover rate they are untrained and green.Some very young masquerading as so called managers.Many are Mexican and barely speak English if at all and a lot of Spanish speaking regular Associates that don't speak a word of English. Use there phones to translate the beat they ken.some are speaking all Spanish anyone's guess what they are saying.I have never seen so much turnover there leaving by the bus load and coming by the bus load.Managers are scared they will lose there jobs and probably will if they don't quit first.

My spouse is almost a 30-year assistant manager. Sp. is getting severance and leaving. It’s not the first choice. When sp. went to work for Walmart in the south and volunteered to come to the northeast, place of childhood family, sp. never thought about having to find a new job in 50’s. Walmart will never be Amazon and why would they want to be?

They are dicking over people who were there when Mr. Sam was. These are things like life insurance and health insurance for our family and finding a job as an older American.

The company was different. The stock is doing well, but it won’t stay that way. They’ve screwed up!

@ 1wea There are no 'top 'shelf' management teams at the Home Office. Just id–ts running around like chickens with their heads cut off making r—ded decisions to speed up the collapse of their brick and mortar stores. They have blinders on that only see Amazon and how they (Amazon) are k–ling it while WM remains stuck in a ditch spinning their wheels.

Ours are not running like hell. I'm sure a few are exploring their options, but most won't leave until they are forced out. Most of our newer ASMs say they are going to take severance if offered. I'm sure will demote and go to another store to be hourly again because they probably can't find something other.

This reminds me of when a steak house I was managing got shut down. My 'notice' was the owner telling me one morning he was closing the store that night—and I wasn't allowed to tell my staff until end of their shift.

There are a lot of sililar communications going on behind closed doors and on text messages right now in Walmart home office. There are top shelf management teams completely aware of how bad this is going to get but aren't allowed to say, because they're desperate to hang on to jobs they know are slipping away.
