I requested off on Black Friday, but it got denied. So what is the penalty for Black Friday? If I call in does it count as regular? I won’t be in the country so that is why I requested off.

I collapsed and was being rolled out to the ambulance when the SM told me that I will need a doctors note for calling off Black Friday. (This was the Wednesday before T day.) I had a heart attack. I got out of the hospital on Sunday , went back to work after Thanksgiving and was wrote up even though they witnessed it and I had a doctors note. Just quit and don't get into retail because of the holidays. It's not worth it especially with so many jobs out there
If you don't show up for work you will be sold to walmart and have to work on Thanksgiving.
— no if they fire you, just get out of retail. Don’t look back.
Lowe's doesn't care about you. You have got to understand that. They only care about the bottom line for the stocks. You are someone that is costing them $$$ Bad place

Working thanksgiving is 100 times worse than Black Friday. Walmart, Kmart, Target, makes their employees work all day on both Thanksgiving and Black Friday. I think the reason why Lowes isn't open thanksgiving is because Marvin and Corporate (I would hope) no that they will not make any money that day so there is no reason to keep their doors open. The big box retailers do it because they want make more money out of Black Friday when in fact, they are only taking sales away from Black Friday itself.

Simple go to doctor on the 23nd get a note that you are unable to work. Bring it to the office after you come back.
The 23rd is a week from Black Friday and it's on the 29th so good luck with that one. If you are legitimately sick then management might ok it, however this person requested off and it was denied.

"The ASM had an Employee arrested last year for calling out on black friday. Laws vary by state and some states have job performance laws on the books from over a hundred years ago that will be enforced if the employer pushes for it."
What law could someone possibly have violated by calling out? This seems awfully suspect.
In my old district area HR would over turn any write up that included a day that sick time was used for. Of course I have no idea what the new policy is. There are states that state sick time is protected time and if you use it your boss cant do anything about it.
Of course, the same HR told us to give workers worklists with deadlines and if they call out using sick time we should write them up for not completing the worklist. That seems kinda...evil. its one thing to write someone up for not completing a list, its another to use that as an excuse because they used sick time.
Call in. Black Friday is overrated. Managers always overreact. Overrated, overblown. Be thankful we are closed on Thanksgiving. Call in and tell the MOD you’re sick. They are not allowed to ask what is wrong ( they aren’t doctors). End of story.
BS

Black Friday is easy. Unless you are in appliances. Then god help you.
Yeah good luck with that. Seriously working at Lowe's on black Friday is a lot easier than working at target or Wal-Mart on black Friday. Yeah it s—s that everyone has to work, but it's a big retail shopping day.
If the travel is to Canada, my management told me that is not considered out of the country when I asked to extend some time I needed off. I guess they figure if Lowe's is colonizing another nation, it's no longer sovereign territory and has been annexed to the US of A.
“ If you have sick time, use it. You arent held accountable when sick time is used, as far as I know.”
That is incorrect. A call in is a call in regardless of using time for it. Of course this probably varies by store and manager like just about everything else.
As a PT person my availability is supposed to be accounted for in scheduling and I’ve indicated I’m not available on Fri/Sat and the first CCS schedule reflected that. Will be interesting if they go against my previous availability approved form for Last week/weekend in November.
Some managers think they have to deny any and all requests for that day. Truth is there is no reason not to approve a few people for black friday of it is a special case, such as being out of the country.
Have you told your manager the reason you needed off? Maybe they are reasonable. Otherwise, you will need to call out and keep record that you called for every day you are out. If you have sick time, use it. You arent held accountable when sick time is used, as far as I know.
ive seen many at my store approved
Expect to be terminated. Someone pulled that last year at my store and was let go 2 weeks later for a "safety infraction". They will find a way to term you, when they want you gone, you will be gone.

This is why you keep an employment lawyer on retainer. It’s pretty obvious it was retaliation. Sue all of the managers involved as individuals. Lowe’s may settle and have them pay out of their own pocket.

Who gives AF at this point. Lowes doesnt gibe a fkk about you, and you shouldnt even consider them. They will see it as a negative, but theres nothing legit they can do, but we know how that is. They'll start harassing you in many ways.
Black Friday with family and friends or working it at Lowe’s. Sounds like a risk worth taking.
A call out is a call out. You can always claim sick, but it won’t be believable in this case because you previously submitted a time off request that was denied.
