Thread regarding Cengage layoffs

information on severance

What is the severance package being offered? Is the job placement resources worth a damn?

How deep will these go?

I found the job placement services very helpful. Beyond getting the resume and LinkedIn profile spiffed up, it was very helpful to have someone to personally answer questions regarding interview trends, unemployment questions, and most of all, a reason to GET UP AND GET A MOVE ON.

The severance package is pretty solid. Just got mine in email.

Agreed on the personal networking comment above - it's how most people find their next job. I engaged the company's outplacement services and they were pretty basic. If you're starting from ground zero, and in entry level or middle management, they can help you update your resume and give you some tips for LinkedIn. They also send you job opportunities. However, I found the best leads come from who you know. So start reaching out to your network (or building one) and be helpful. Maybe even do some pro bono work - it can make a difference. Good luck, everyone. There is life after Cengage. And perhaps even a better one!

I have never heard of one week per year— it has always been two.

In recent years it’s 1 week per year of service. Job resources are worthless.

LinkedIn, personal networking, etc... are the best way to find another job.

As long as you have relevant skills and aren’t just a publishing specialist you’re going to be a lot better off once the shock wears off.
