Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Why can't Oracle be honest about upcoming layoffs?

HP just announced that they are going to reduce head-count over the next year by 7000-9000 people. They have come up with an early retirement program to go with that.

That is at least an honest heads-up about what to expect.

Is it that they want to hide the layoffs coming up, or is it that Oracle is soooooo f—ed up that the upper management can't plan anything in advance?

I think it's the latter, I think Oracle management is so clueless that there is no one who can say what the headcount should be in a year from now. Instead, they sit and do nothing but cross their fingers and pray. They can't plan ahead for what sections of the company to cut, because they know absolutely nothing about anything the company does. Instead, they are hands-off, and just let whatever melt-away. What a cop-out. Don't take any responsibility for anything and then you are screwed if you work there. Chaos throughout the company. Such a sh—show.

Dishonesty and incompetence from bottom to top.

And the BoD goes along with it. LE has basically said he doesn't want to think about anything and they keep him there and his s—up id–ts running it all into the ground and screwing over their customers and employees.

This post shows that a company can do right by its employees, by giving them some notice of where the company is at and letting them know it will have to cut its workforce.

Oracle never gives warning. It continuously lays off its employees without any notice. This policy makes the remaining employees constantly worried about the future. No one can work well in an environment like Oracle's.

OCI was supposed to be the future of Oracle.... but then in March they lay off hundreds in that area..... what does that signal to the employees? Chaos? Doubt? It's a signal for those who can, to leave, and that leaves Oracle in a worse situation than it was. The mood inside the company is dark and uncertain. People chatter about who's going to be laid off next instead of the future of some technology that could be worked on.

The only answer here is that the upper level management does not care about the people who work at Oracle. Make no mistake that employees are PEOPLE. They have lives, families, commitments outside of work, etc.

In addition, the management is clueless and has no idea what direction to go, prompting LE to say things will just "melt away" and that he's just trying to make a living only. He doesn't care about the future of the company and neither should you.

Oracle is a dead company that will limp along for years. You should use whatever resources you have to gain the knowledge you need to move to the next job. There is nothing here you should be loyal to. Do what you need to do for yourself and your family.

This week I know of three great folks, leaders, have had enough! They are leaving. Jumping ship.

They are doing the right thing. Everyone should take a lesson from them.

It's the better people who have gone to Google. What is left in their absence will decay quickly. Corruption and dishonesty in the majority of the management will not keep the lights on for that long.

If you are working to screw someone else over, you are just working to destroy your own workplace. Nothing stops after you are done, the feuds between groups just continue and destroy everything.

At its heart, a truly dishonest and opaque company with rigid processes, where innovation is nonexistent in favor of a ruthless extraction of disappearing revenue from customers who hate you.
Once you understand that, the answer is clear.

Oracle never gives heads up of layoffs for fear of essential employees leaving on their own and triggering an exodus. They need people to keep the lights on.

Employees at Oracle should behave the same way - be transactional, greedy and just be in it for themselves.

This is basically true of a lot of employees already. It doesn't make anything better.

Same is true for the government, just because you think there is some corruption in government doesn't mean we just give it all up and throw everything away. Corruption needs to be fought, not added to.

The unfortunate premise in OP's post is that he / she has pride in his employer and employment - unfortunately it's not reciprocated. The company and leadership don't feel the same way.

They don't care about the employee's livelihoods or feelings. Employees are a commodity.

Of course they are not honest. Their types always lie. Lots of books were written about how they lie.

LE owns 30% or more of Oracle and nominates the board members: nobody can fire him; he will be running Oracle until he dies. After each stock buy back , his equity of Oracle ownership increases.

LE is is Mr. Handsoff, works 3 days a week and wants to just let whatever "melt away". The BoD should kick him out.
