Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Union pays 4% for healthcare while the rest of americans pay 25% of its healthcare how ludicrous

Keep buying those freeking cars and support this c-ap. Hell no. Wake up UNION. Wake up Ms Mary. You folks are out of touch. I will never buy another New Vehicle period. You people are out of touch profoundly. Appreciate what you have.

What you should be b–ching about is why dont the rest of us get 3% instead of 25% plenty of companies could afford this, they just tell everyone they cant.

There are some companies that pay 100% of their employee's health care. So what? Our company cares for our health and you say that's bad? A healthy workforce = productive workforce. This might piss you off but we get $1,500 in HSA money as an incentive for doing an annual physical! We also have on-site wellness check.

What we get in lower healthcare cost gets made up else where. No free coffee or snacks, no team outings, no off-site training. Our end of the year lunches is paid out of our own pocket. My previous companies had all those things, sometimes the entire office takes a day off for a baseball game.

You'd rather the money be given to big wig shareholders and banks? LOL. GTFO.

It's pretty slimy for GM to cancel people's health insurance in the middle of the month when the insurance premium was already paid on the 1st.

At the moment, the UAW is paying 100% of their healthcare.

Actually, I think you have it backwards.
It probably takes more courage to 'Speak Out' when you're NOT protected by a union...

Salaried employees don't walk off the job because they prefer to negotiate for themselves rather than hide like cowards and commies behind a Union.

How many millions per day for the UAW to cover their own health insurance from the strike fund? That $250 per week is probably actually costing more like $500 per week.

Don't you just love private health care. High deductibles. Choice of Dr limited... Drs can't easily share info. D–gs out a site. Why did we get health ins through our employer? They don't know anything. Employers should not be in the Insurance bus.

Yes I understand what it means to be a salaried employee, if they all walked off the job and demand to form a professional union GM would be screwed.
GM can't fire every salaried employee if they walked out.
This would shut down the company and management would be forced into allowing the salary people to form a union of there own, now would be the time to do it, strike while the iron is hot, if not the next round of layoffs you will be in the exact same position you are in now, helpless. GM could make salary folks go into plants and cross picket lines, don't be that guy.

@114vJwhe-cgt

Yeah, that's EXACTLY what he's saying.

But The point that you are missing:
If all the SALARY FTE walked off.... GM wouldn't be ABLE to FIRE everyone.
because there would be NO ONE left to work.
NO ONE left to RETRAIN the replacements.

But it's really an "ALL or NOTHING" deal;
it only works if EVERYONE steps up.

Otherwise,
they just FIRE the MINORITY who dared to "challenge the system"... and then its Back to the pits for the rest of you peasants.,,

do you understand the difference between salaried jobs and union jobs? You want salaried workers to walk off the job really?? do your homework please before you make a comment like that.

Nonunion employees are typically hired “at will,” meaning they can be fired for no reason - INCLUDING NOT SHOWING UP FOR WORK!! and they don't get strike pay!! So you want them to go on strike, then get fired, and get no strike pay/no unemployment.

Exactly correct, all of the salary folks should walk off the job too but don't have the stones, now would be a perfect time to do so. But, .....they won't.
That would shut EVERYTHING down and prove a massive point to not only GM but the world. No guys no glory

If there's no contract in place right now, GM can do what they want.

If workers don't show up for their jobs and don't have an excused absence like a doctor's appointment, they can just fire them.

If GM salaried workers weren’t so afraid of creating a salaried union like Boeing, you might have a lower priced health plan. Instead, that money goes into Barra’s Salary! GM takes advantage of their employees whether UAW or salaried but UAW at least have the power to resist. Once you get laid off you will understand how powerless you are.

Why doesn't GM just fire all the striking union workers and start over fresh with new people?

This is their chance to have non union plants like they always wanted.

So your jealous you pay 26% more for healthcare!!! Do something about it rather than sit there and continue to just pay it! Just like college costs, they raise tuition and all these fools line up and take even more loans. We as a society are bunch of minions with zero backbone!!! They raise prices and you just work harder and harder!! UAW is at least putting up a fight!!! You should also.

Toyotas sold in north America are made in north America.

Camrys are built in Kentucky, tundras in San Antonio, and Corollas in Mississippi.

On the other hand, a lot of gm vehicles are built in Mexico and china.

"...Appreciate what you have."

Right.
Heaven forbid these people get the notion to demand/fight for more.

Rearding your healthcare observation:
10 years ago, i learned that Toyota has a SIGNIFICANT advantage when it comes their employees' health costs.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_care_system_in_Japan

Makes it kind of difficult to compete when your competition has lower production costs.
