Thread regarding IBM layoffs

RA today... 8/1/2019

Well... today was the day. RA notice for a 61 year old, with 30 + years, in Watson Customer Engagement division, working out of New Hampshire USA. No surprise,.. was hit with RA twice before but was able to jump to another division in IBM with some help each of those other times... Think now is the time to say good bye to IBM.

Did you all see this in the other post? https://amp.tomshardware.com/news/ibm-class-action-age-lawsuit-100000-fired,40064.html

Ibm has been laying off for age discrimination for at least 15 years that I have seen.

Leave and get out - you’ll be so much happier on the other side!!! Been happily gone 7 years :D

I have been trying to get another job but at age 67 it is going to be tough. I came from a company that was acquired by IBM way back in 2010. I have spent nearly half of my life working the same job through just 9 or those years as an actual IBM employee. I tried asking if they would negotiate a longer severance package. Three months of work, and one month of pay, is not much. I was told that IBM does not negotiate. This is the package that everyone gets. I guess it is time to move on.

I was RAed in June and have since applied for about 15 jobs on the internal IBM job board. On just two of the jobs does it still say that my application is being considered and on all the rest it says that I am no longer being considered. To be honest, I think I am out of the running for those two jobs as well and no one has bothered to update the message. So much for loyalty. I have always gotten great reviews and have made money for the company. Guess that just does not count as far as IBM is concerned.

I would not wait around for anything inside of IBM if you have been RA'd.
Especially if you are in one of the river rat communities, just move on.

@vkw it's not shortsighted. It's either incompetent, or deliberate to stretch them out beyond the WARN act thresholds.

Regarding the comment about finding another job internally while on RA status – That is not likely to happen. I tried for several jobs during my time period - would never hear back. Same as my co-workers experienced in their earlier rounds. This seems to be by design.

Took awhile, but I came to accept that they just wanted us out of the company. They weren't interested in seeing if we could fill a void in some other part of IBM.

@wad While nothing is perfect Glassdoor is a good place to check your market value. Look at your current employer on there (click on salary) with your title and position, and also search for a couple of their competitors you know of to compare to. Reddit, paysa, indeed, and even h1bdata.info are also good for consideration. Don't forget to sort based on location - this is very important. Salaries will be considerably higher in high CoL areas. Advisory at IBM translates to Senior at most other companies I know of, while Senior at IBM is more like Principal - levels.fyi is good for career ladder comparison.

Got hit today too. Been here almost 15 years. I don't even think I'm going to pursue anything internal. Time to move on!

I was hit just 8 weeks ago and in the same groups as those mentioned today being affected (GTS Infra Svcs). How can IBM be so shortsighted to layoff people in one team in June and then come back and layoff more before the first batch have even left the building?!?!

Me too all older people. If you make good money at IBM, you should be looking. They just want low paid (unknowing students) or offshore people.
