Thread regarding IBM layoffs

IBM Watson Health's new manager talks about returning to basics, doubling down

And as discrepancies between its eventual offerings and earlier promises became clearer, the company
began narrowing its pursuits to more successful areas.

How tactfully phrased!

Nevertheless, the Watson name went unmentioned in IBM’s latest earnings presentations for the
second quarter. The company did point to revenue growth in its cognitive software division but said it
was driven largely by its cybersecurity and cloud-based applications.

Yes, curious that there was not one peep about the vaunted and mighty Watson, curious indeed. . .

@10dTo1bx-9kxu: I was still working for Truven when the acquisition by IBM went down. At the first "meet and greet" town hall after the acquisition was finalized, the IBM "integration executive" at the time said, in so many words, "all we really want is your data."

With that, and the fact that I had the misfortune of working for IBM for 5 years previously and knew what they were about already, I was out the door at the first opportunity after that. A lot of people couldn't understand why I was bailing at the time, but they're finding out why now.

Reminds me of Rolm IBM purchased Rolm in 1984. They sent a VP from Armonk out and his first words were “I’m not here to drain your swimming pool”. (Rolm had a company pool). 3 weeks later the pool was drained So when IBM says we are doubling down on Truven and Merge, I would take it with a grain of salt. It’s all about costs, and the CFO has already decided if these companies have the correct profit profile He has been tasked with migrating to higher margin engagements If layoffs get him to that profile, he is happy. If not, he will most likely exit that business

"new manager talks about returning to basics, doubling down", Heard it all many times before. These buzzwords from IBM Management sounded great in the 1970's and 80's but nothing changed in the way IBM did business even then. IBM Management keeps recycling these great sounding but meaningless phrases in hopes that the minions will fall for their BS line. Trust me, I spent 35 Years there and retired when I decided it was time in 2012. Nothing will change or get better.

Truven and Merge were good, profitable companies when IBM bought them. It would be a shame to see them "milked dry " and sc-apped.

Watson was typical IBM smoke and mirrors. Billions invested and no return.
