Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

GM UAW Will strike !?

I was a technician at GM contract from 2003 to December of 2018, I lived my work and it took me a very long time to make the money I had at the end.
$32.00 hourly and I deserved every penny of it, I should have been hired summer of 2018, my manager refused to release me from my position, if he would have done that I would have been hired salary direct.
Not only was I not hired but fired six months later! If I would have been hired at least I could have searched for a new position internal at GM, A big thank you to my Sr Manager for his selfish behavior could cost me my house, my credit is absolutely destroyed too.
His excuse was that my degree wasn't finished yet, I had a year to go before I was fired, now it's four months to go for completing the degree. Instead they brought in a guy that knew absolutely nothing and needed training, because our business is a total racket and who you know my guess that's the reason why I didn't get hired. I know I'm definitely not the only one this has happened to. As for the UAWs, they should strike as so many people we're needlessy fired, GM is preparing for some kind of down turn!?!? Absolute B.S. If anything them along with politician's will create this so called down turn so they can fatten their greedy wallet more.
Don't forget all of the suppliers GM owes money to and the tax payers of our country. I hope and pray I will recover and soon, same to all of you that are struggling to this day.

Thank you to all that responded.
Last summer there certainly was a request open for the position my partner had, he retired.
The job requirement was associates degree or equivalent experience.
The person that retired within my small lab had no degree at all! There was only two of us in the lab, he was salary and I was contract , once he left I sat in the room/ lab by myself for two months before his replacement showed up. Most of the time I was in the lab by myself anyway doing work while this guy was either sleeping in his truck or at the junkyard, in my 6 years at this particular lab my so called partner rarely worked a full 8 hour day.
My Sr Manager could have hired me I was on time everyday and so where my deliverables.
I appreciate the words from all of you and I know you're correct.

The managers in place lack certain knowledge that grants an opportunity within their role. That, or they either don't care or want to rock the boat.

While speaking with HR, it was specifically addressed that anyone without a completed degree was filtered out as a direct hire candidate during application, and those working onsite without a completed degree, couldn't apply and expect to be hired directly. It didn't matter if you were the subject matter expert in the field for 30 years, only this paper mattered when it came to the direct hire process. While that was their policy, as a side step, it was also within a managers ability to push any candidate through for a direct hire position so long as a req was open, and they really wanted this individual as part of their group. A degree was not required. However, most people are never this lucky. Most managers don't know this, or they know and don't act on talented and deserving candidates.

I've heard of multiple stories where certain individuals were considered among the more talented within the department, only to get tossed out in the future wave of layoffs simply because of status. Contractors always go first. But, karma has a tendency of returning the favor in time, both upon the company for their unfavorable behavior, and the talented individual that finds a new, higher paying job.

Right now GM is going through it's 'get woke' moment. It could get very expensive for them as their actions have unintended ripple effects they can't yet see. In the meantime, I wish you all the best. There's an opportunity out there for everyone.

Some advice definitely get your degree you will be better off since you are so close to getting it anyway. There are many people that I have worked with over the years at GM that didn't have a degree and were hired permanently. In fact I have seen them hire supervisors that took the supervisors test that didnt pass and didn't have a degree. There were others who passed the test and had engineering degree and didnt hire them!! Trust me get the degree and work elsewhere, build experience and knowledge. Good luck!

Precisely why the uaw should strike, it's a last resort and nobody wants to do it but enough is enough already, and the salary heads should very seriously consider a professional union while the iron is hot.
The obvious is this, of course there are plenty of bad apples in our business but there are also working Moms and Dads, countless families that need protection of some kind from this gross and sicking trend of pure greed in our country, the US is better than this and we are the people that make it run.

What matters is the CEO's pay and bonus.

Yes, you are exactly right 10ZoFu0a, this was right out of the standard corporate playbook. Have a mass layoff then quietly increase the work content to your cheaper overseas design and manufacturing centers. This has been done for the last 40 years. However, Barra added a twist by having a mass hiring immediately before the layoffs. She is such a class act!
It is interesting that for all those years we were told by the CEO's and the media that a corporation's primary and only duty was to maximize shareholder profit. We heard this after every mass layoff. Now we are hearing from 'woke' companies like Gillette that advocacy of social issues take precedence over shareholder profits. What outrage do you hear from the media and others after their profits tanked because upset consumers were not buying their products? The hypocrisy is beyond belief. Anyways 10ZoFu0a, Good Luck and don't give up as I am sure there is a better opportunity out there for you.
