Thread regarding Verizon Wireless layoffs

SM

I’ve been mulling over applying for an SM position. I’ve been with the company a long time, as an SS, and frankly, I don’t believe in whatever direction 2.0 is taking us. I believe in supporting others though, and I genuinely care about developing others.

I guess my question is: If I believe most of what we’re being fed is manure, is the SM position going to work out, even short-term, for me? Will I be able to bite my tongue and deliver the same manure to other people? Can I fight the fight within? As long as I put others’ needs first, will that be enough to make me an effective SM?

Trolls not welcome, but talk your sh–, I guess.

That’s why you shouldn’t be and won’t gain the position of SM.

If you’re looking to go into marketing or training an SM role will help you get there period! Get the experience you need in managing ppl, do what you can but always remember to keep it pushing and don’t stay in that role forever. Network and manage your relationship with ppl you know in those roles and it will happen as long as you got what it takes. -from someone whose worked their way up from retail into both departments and kept goin.

Love the Passion and the idea. .

But 3 things

  1. If you aren't a yes man, u will have a hard life as an SM
  2. Retail is dying. use the passion and desire to improve your life elsewhere
  3. If you think you will be an SM for a short period of time, and then get promoted you are not in reality.

I was an SM and went to b2b. I had great respect and results as an SM and decent results as a BAM and still couldn't get into marketing.

If you have the opportunity, you should advance your career. I worked during tough times in VZ. It made me better. I learn how to manage upward and downward. You will grow as a person. If they eliminate that position as some say on this blog, it will be an advantage to you outside VZ. There is life out there. Good luck!

The SM job will be gone soon anyway. "Heard from a very reliable source they will be trimming the fat" lol

Thank you all for the honest feedback.

If it matters, my career path wouldn’t be SM < GM < DM. Ideally, I’d like to move into Marketing or Training. I only want the SM position for a short time, just to hone my skills for something better and in a bigger city.

It will put you in a better position for “career advancement” (if you can call it that at Verizon), but it will take your soul. There is no room for independent thinking or questioning any orders above the rank of SS.

Find another job. Verizon is where dreams never happen. No life no work life balance work like a dog. Sm are a bunch of losers that take it no lube from upper management

I agree with the last poster. It's a tough position to be in right now. There is alot of sh– to shovel. And reps are pretty disgruntled. And gms and dms will push it off to you to improve morale. And if it doesnt its on you not them.

I personally think it depends where you want to go in the company. I have been with the company for few years now and think the SM spot is the worst spot to go to due to the fact they get Sh_T on from the top and bottom. If you want to be a GM or even a DM at some point then I would go that route. If you have no ambition to do that then I wouldnt. Also I would go to a store that is not 11-7, I think those store will end up with one GM and one SM and possibly a lead SS. Just my two cents and obviously this is all guessing. Goodluck either way!
