My husband works at one of the clubs and he has been complaining about the implementation of the so-called block scheduling. I can’t seem to understand it. Would anybody be kind enough to explain how the block scheduling works, and why it was condemned by many of the Sam’s employees? Sorry to post here as I am an outsider , but I would really like to know

Management still does what they want anyway. The part timers are being scheduled to close everyday. Might as well give them full time and continue scheduling them 3 to 1130.
Our club doesn't follow block scheduling. They never follow home office direction. They pick and chose what they want to do. I'm sure if home office knew they would not be happy. And if you report it you will be on the black list.
Short and sweet 4 groups.
Merchandisers: AM Shift 4am to 12:30pm and PM Shift 3pm to 11:30pm (Full time positions)
Member Services: AM Shift 6am to 2:30pm and PM Shift 1pm to 9:30pm (Full time positions)
Part timers are to fill in any gaps in coverage between 7am to 9:30pm.
Specialty groups have rotating schedules meaning their hours will be all over the place and the same with their days off.
there is also a 6 to 230 shift for the FT front end associates PT people are suppose to fill in the caps in between with no staff its just not working out well
This is not true in all clubs. Some people that I know are working 5-1 or 6-2 shifts.
Block Scheduling was adopted as a way to eliminate having to staff an overnight crew in order to move received freight, stock the store and be able service the members. There are basically two full time shifts. One is 4am to 12:30pm and the other is 3pm to 11:30pm. Unfortunately, a majority of the clubs are now even more woefully understaffed than they were before these changes were implemented. Compounding these issues is the outsourcing of the personnel process to a third party, which has caused further issues with bringing in new hires to cover the shortages. As a result, existing issues have only been magnified and increased, and a laundry list of new problems added to weigh them down even more. It's like being told to throw darts at a rspidly moving bullseye, then being handed feathers with no sharp ends. The really sad part of it is, this is all being done by design and everyone involved at this end is now convincingly set up to fail. It gives those at the top an easy decision to make once they have to pull the plug on however many stores are next in line to be closed.
For full timers it is from 4am to 12:30 or it could be from 3pm to 11:30. You are giving set days. This should be the same until you change your position. This is the basic answer to you question.
not a mystery...for most full timers there are two shifts..the morning shift works from 4 AM till 12:30 PM. The afternoon shift works from 3 PM till 11:30 PM Whichever of the two shifts you work you work it all the time. The people with the most seniority were able to choose which of the two shifts they work. Also in general , depending on which work group you are in , the seniority people also got to choose their days off. very few people get both Saturday and Sunday off. Several people though were able to get off either Friday and Saturday or Saturday and Sunday. At any rate most full timers are locked into their schedule. For some it is a good thing for others not so much.
