Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Layoffs in September! Can anyone confirm?

I just heard that GM is planning another round of layoffs in September. I heard it may only be for low performers. Can anyone confirm this?

Due to ongoing UAW negotiations, I’d be surprised if there are any September layoffs. They don’t want any unnecessary bad press.

It's almost September.

I guess we'll soon see if there was anything to this rumor.

GM has lots of salaried workers who aren't doing much now who can fill in on the assembly lines.

UAW strike vote is next week at tech center. They are all talking about striking minimum 30 days.

What about if they ONLY bring in new college hires?

If you're over 30, you need not apply?

College recruiting program is certainly not against the law. Make sure you have your facts straight if you are want people to take you seriously as your pursue a lawsuit. Otherwise, you are going to be dismissed as simply a disgruntled former employee spewing inaccuracies around that one might stick so you can land a big payoff.

Take the emotion out of it. That goes a long way with credibility. You can lose your mind in the safety of your own home, but stay level when dealing with the public.

Are the people who are returning younger than the people who were let go?

Did they just replace the older workers with younger ones?

The opposite,
I am hearing from recruiters that folks are slowly Returning to GM.
Every time there are big layoffs/firings it's in December.
08/09 was December last time too, if anything I have heard from friends on the inside that retirements and allot of them this fall. Hang in there ladies and gentlemen, we will make it in God's will. Many blessings for all of us that work in this brutal business.
Maybe one day we can make it a fun and great place to work again. This leader ship is a clever one with all the word smithing and diversity distraction's they spew, I think that's not on people's mind or agenda on a daily basis, all distraction's, just look at LinkedIn, every company is saying and doing the same thing, and people fall for it! Honestly at the end of the day nobody cares.

I have an EEOC age discrimination case against GM.

Anyone with dirt, please email me at tommy.vinson@usa.net

I am not afraid of GM, f&%k GM

The college recruiting program is against the law. College hires is just another work for young people.

Anyone with a high school diploma can do HR work, if suggest cutting there first, Hell make all of HR contract heads or better yet farm it out to a company like Bartech! HR people are clueless when it comes to people and their careers, as far as their involvement they should have zero say in any GM business period, it should be all handled by the GM hiring managers. Anyone can process paperwork with entry-level computer skills HR is an overpaid joke that knows nothing about the people or background of an individual. GM should seriously consider making a deep change with the so called HR department.

They have already completed the CAP 9 box in June. With that being said definitely the low performers will let go before the end of the year. I would confirm that if HR got involved in the MID year CAP means it is time to start applying somewhere else.
Low performers are nothing but a manager's sh– list. FAV people (AKA sons and daughters) are kept safe even if their contribution is zero!!!!!!

Hell only 50% of the workforce is going, if only low performers. Do not forget to include the UAW members too. Make a goal of shutting at least one assembly plant every 3 years. Time to put some of the UAW in the street.

The discrimination starts at age 40 and gets steadily worse as you get older.

"Over 40" is a protected class just like race, but nobody enforces it so companies can discriminate like crazy because they know they can get away with it.

As is the case with most all businesses of any size the magic cut marker age is 60 and it matters not the performance criteria. Health care and old age maladies cost companies far more than putting together a severance package then letting them go. Unless you’re a top executive, you’re vulnerable once you turn 60. GM is no different from most Fortune 500 companies in this regard.

There's a sporting chance. They are still looking to free up 10 billion in cash before the end of 2019.

Heard a much better pkg will be offered to offload the old dudes aka oak trees. There are many capable people at gm, but we keep having to relearn expensive mistakes when we unload these experienced people.

Check out Toyoda Gosei which is a Japanese company. During their new hire orientation, they go over the culture which is markedly different than American businesses. Specifically, they have a slide that compares Japanese to American companies where American has no loyalty to the employee whereas Japanese you have a job for life. They could have replaced the generic "American" with "GM" in almost every instance. Sad.

Low performers were not targeted in the Feb layoffs so unlikely to happen in future. I know several that were in the above average category and laid off. They are after maximizing cost reduction, so will likely be older employees who tend to make higher salaries. My GM unclassified friend told me they are formulating a new list in case there is a need for more lay-offs as a result of the likely UAW strike. It appears that this next lay-off could be several thousand. Did anyone else hear anything similar?

August or September is the bogie. Of course depending on what news is out at the time. Timing is everything and will be altered so the salaried layoffs are not page one news.

I hope not for you guys a gals, gee wizz already. Sounds like this is UAW strike prep, meaning if they strike then more salary layoffs? CEO is spreading the butter thick with all these recent Money dumps into plants recently due to UAWs contracts talks coming up. I feel layoffs are a big rumor because GM is getting so much negativity in the press but hey I guess it's a possibility again, I hope not. as for low performance I remember allot of that, my thought is move people around to encourage growth instead of firing them, at least you give folks a chance to improve, unless they are flat out lazy and just don't care.

Yes, because that is how GM works. Only "low performers" get let go. See how well that worked earlier this year. And only the pick of the litter (if you will) still working at the Tech Center and Ren Cen!

LOL!
