Chevroid IT lead here giving my OPINION. Gen X on onion, so no f*cks given. I might do an AMA next week.
We value our embedded IT above all others (BU IT employees). Especially IT folks with a petrotechnical background. Our recent push is software engineering and "digital" so get your edX/Coursera cranking.
Our central IT does reorgs/layoffs on a regular basis...Not a fun place to be unless you are already a leader. I'll speculate that the DJ and Powder River basin related offices might be toast-- I doubt we want to operate in CO/WY.
We are a M$ and $LB shop and its hard to get experienced IT/petrotechs to go to Midland so who knows? Finally, we pay our IT the same as our petrotechs for a given pay grade so survivors might find the pay pretty competitive for IT in Texas.
In IT in the business units (embedded), we generally have a low a--hole ratio (my opinion) although competency is sometimes a problem and the work can be boring. IT is treated reasonably well at CVX. No d--gs tolerated BTW. You should thank god XOM didn't buy you because you would all be fired and outsourced to Mumbai.
